21  Re: Covert Art Abandoners Swap Gallery in The Swap Gallery by LeapFeetFirst on: October 08, 2012 10:09:23 AM
I received from Summer6061 this weekend!! When I saw the HUGE box sitting on my doorstep- I got really excited about what was inside. After ripping it open, I discovered that Summer had gone in a slightly different direction- instead of creating something for someone to take home, she made beautiful birdhouses for me to place in the parks around my house- to be left there for all to enjoy. I absolutely love this idea and as soon as I am done with my midterms on Wednesday- I am going to spend the day leaving them around town.

I am having a hard time choosing which one to keep- but I am thinking that I will keep the book bird house. It is so my style!

Also for those that wanted to see some close up photos of my art- you can check them out HERE

23  Creating a 'Verse in Needlework: Completed Projects by LeapFeetFirst on: September 27, 2012 09:46:00 AM

I wasn't sure where to put this, so I just picked a board  Grin

For the latest hoopla swap I knew I wanted to create something based on one of my favorite, and my partner's favorite, television shows- Firefly. I decided to embroider a part of the opening theme song, but I needed the perfect fabric to stitch it on. After searching the local fabric stores, I decided to create my own galaxy fabric!

Starting with a piece of plain black cotton fabric.

Add a little diluted bleach and scrunch the fabric

Dry the fabric

And then proceed to completely cover the bleached parts with paint, so you can't tell you bleached it.  Roll Eyes When I started painting I wanted to just add highlights and dimension, and I ended up covering everything.

Now the stitching can begin! I was worried about how I would transfer my design to my newly created galaxy print- but luckily I found a pack of colored carbon paper at JoAnn's. You can also see the finished fabric.

Forty hours of satin stitching later and the piece is complete! I used glow in the dark thread for this piece to give it a little punch. I am not sure I would ever do this much satin stitching with glow in the dark thread again. I had to un-do knots every other stitch.

I think the end result was totally worth the hassle though!

25  Re: Embroidery Hoopla R8 - The Wordy Round Gallery in The Swap Gallery by LeapFeetFirst on: September 09, 2012 12:29:14 PM
I received the coolest hoopla from goldfishpollywog. I am a little late to the Battlestar Galactica fandom, but better late than never. I actually just finished watching the final episode a few days ago, so this hoop is perfect!!

goldfish stitched this in white thread and then tinted everything by hand! So awesome.

And I love how she finished the back:

Here it is on my Wall 'O Craftster artwork!!

Thank you so much Summer!!

P.S. This new quick insert of photos is amazeballs. It makes putting pictures into posts SO much easier!!

SheepBlue- maybe add something to the end of the red string? Or maybe another pop of color behind the keys? I love the rusted look of your piece.

After reading what everyone else is doing, I am afraid my creations are going to be too plain. I bought some 3x3 canvases at Michael's and I've been messing around with them- adding texture and colors.

I haven't decided how I am going to finish them yet...
