You could just get some spare fabric and just attempt to make something that you have seen and you like and try to make it in your own way.
If you wanted to learn how to crochet I know a book that is really helpfull it taught me to crochet. I think that there is one for knitting.

Wow! thats the book I have! I just cannot get the dang catch of it! But maybe I should try again for the 75th time lol I do have a few ideas I just dont want to mess up anything like I did my last attempt, of a shirt recon...not good at all
