11  Re: Help! I have tons of fabric to organize. But How??? in Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions by ChrisSews on: March 11, 2012 02:46:20 PM
You can roll the fabric and put the rolls upright in the tote.  That way you can see all the material and pull it out without having to pull all the other fabric out.  Like this....

I tend to roll larger pieces of fabric.  If I have less than a yard then I fold it (or I have lots wrapped as mini bolts on my shelves) but keep it separate.  That way if I'm making a larger project I don't have to sort through piles of small pieces.  You could also do mini bolts and then place them in the totes.  Really small scraps  get tossed into a shoebox.

I like to organize my fabric according to its use.  So I have one tote for fleece, another for wool and felt, an area for garment fabric separated into bottom weight and shirt weight, quilting cotton shelved in mini bolts, etc.  Then I sub-sort according to color.  Label the totes (on the end or sides) so you know what kind of fabric is in each.  If you want to be really organized you can make lists, photos, swatches, etc of what's in each tote as other have suggested.

Feb was a low volume crafting month for me.  I have been doing tons of cooking.  I got a new book all about traditional ways to preserve meat, Charcuterie: The Craft of Salting, Smoking, and Curing.  The hubby and I have been trying out the recipes.  We made a pork comfit (the most tender pork I've ever had).  We have bacon soaking in a cure...it'll be ready to smoke tomorrow.  So far I've done a sage breakfast sausage, a sweet Italian, and a Polish sausage.  The polish sausage is going to be smoked along with the bacon tomorrow.  I'm having lots of fun playing around with making the sausages and it is a new skill to learn but I'm not really counting cooking toward by 50 projects list.

I did get a couple of swap items done....

Kitty for the Stuffed Animal Swap

A pencil skirt and wood carved ukelele neck for the OWS....forgot to take a pic of the skirt and the neck is in transit so I'll add pics later.

Here are a couple of swap items I actually made in Jan but never posted pics of.

A WA themed embroidery done by machine in a thread painting/free motion embroidery style.

And some flower headbands.

I received my wonderful stuffie from mamarose22 earlier this week and just have been really busy.  Finally got a chance to get some pics and post.

Here he is...

Isn't he wonderful.  She picked him right off my pinterest and did a great job.  I love how the wings stick out to look just like he's waddling...gives he lots of penguin personality.

I came home to find two great packages in the mail.

Quilted sent me some baby onesies for my new niece/nephew arriving this summer.
Aren't the animal patches cute?

She also made me this button hoopla.  It's the perfect color for my craft room. She even dyed the buttons herself!

Lindy ordered a lip balm kit for me from and Etsy seller.  I'm excited to try it out and see how the mica powder coloring works.

I've gotten two great packages this week.

scarlet_nights sent me a box of circular knitting needles, threads, and a few extra ribbons.  I'm thrilled to have a wider collection of circulars now.

YumJello01 sent me a box full of fabric.  Some great brown satin I'm going to turn into pillows plus lots of samples for various fabrics with all kinds of different textures.  I'm going to use them for a textured quite book for babies.  There are some great velvets, satins, plus a really cool vinyl wall covering material.

Thanks so much...this has been a really great idea for a swap.  I'm not sure I have a lot to give left...but I do have a handful of things no one has claimed so I might be able to do another round.

I love the felt food...very well done.

I received from skaborski today.  She sent me this great jellyfish hoopla.  I love the stitching she did on the tentacles.

Plus she sent along a crewel work book.  Can't wait to try some of the stitches from it.

Those TM patches are great.

Cross stitching all the letters does seem like a long term project but fun to do.

Here's the last of what I've finished for the month...

A WIP pillow for me.  I embroidered the circles a couple of months ago and finally got around to making it into a pillow.  I have some brown satin material I want to use and make another that matches this one.

Unpapertowels- they're white and a gift for my sister.

alwaysinmyroom - if it's easier for you here's what I have for the Jan Challenge....Pics of everything on my list

WIP: 3 projects - Bird ornaments, Surgery Cap for Hubby, Circle pillow (also a project for me)

I've managed to finish up a few more projects this weekend.  I have to take pics of some still but here's one I'm happy to be finished with.  They were suppose to be Christmas ornaments/presents but I didn't quite finish them.  Funny thing is this project actually started about 4 years ago.  Made a couple of these and gave one to each of my sisters.  One of my sisters said she wanted a whole set of them but I sort of forgot all about it.  Organizing my supplies a few months ago I found the material and pattern...even a few pieces I had cut out.  I figured it was well past time I finished a set of these!

I posted a few pics of other projects on my list as well...nothing too exciting though.

I also have 2 swap Item I finished but don't want to post pics until they're received.
