81  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / Tissue Boxes on: December 20, 2007 05:57:38 AM
Does anyone have any ideas of what I could do with empty tissue boxes?

These are super cute. I'm sure that your nieces will love them. Are you going to put a picture in each of them?
83  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions / Re: Your first machine, a buyers guide on: December 19, 2007 06:23:20 PM
Thanks for this guide. I have been thinking that I might want to try my hand at sewing, but I didn't know what to look for in a machine for someone who has "never sewn but want to learn how". Does anyone have any specific brand/model suggestions for someone who simply wants a basic, inexpensive machine to learn on?

Update: I decided to go with:

PERSPECTIVE
Everything feels better behind the wheel of a Jag.
85  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Poster Slogan Ideas on: December 18, 2007 07:44:32 AM
I would like to make a motivational-style poster (like this: http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/motivator.php) for my dad, but I need help coming up with a slogan. My dad LOVES his car (it's a second-hand Jag that he got a deal on) and so I am looking for a slogan related to his car. The slogan needs to have one stand alone world (e.g. BEAUTY) and some subtext (e.g. It's Only Car-Deep).

The poster doesn't have to be motivational in any way - it can be a funny conversation piece that he could put up in his cubicle at work.

I don't know about paint, but you can get plastic travel mugs with removable inserts:
-Starbucks Create Your Own Tumbler, http://www.starbucksstore.com/products/shprodde.asp?SKU=602310
-Bazzill Basics Paper Memory Mug

Great gift idea! I would love something like this, as it is really hard to build up a stock of embellishments when you are just starting out  (like me).

I'm not sure of your abilities, so I will just list all of the ideas that come to my head:

-french memory board (in her favourite colours)
-book covers
-bookmarks (these could be paper, knitted, crocheted, or beaded)
-cushions (you could make these buy hand or stencil/use iron-on transfers on some purchased cushions)
-bookends
-tote bag
-curtains
-decoupaged mirror
-stuffed mug or travel mug
-plushie of some sort (to keep her company)
-homemade calendar/desk calendar
-motivational posters (http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/motivator.php)
-fun school supplies (you could buy these and give them along with something that you make)
-notebook bag or cover (if she has a notebook)
-decorated wooden letters that spell her name or initials (this has been posted about a few times)

For the punk brother, why not stencil him a chef's hat (maybe using his favourite band as inspiration)?

What about a totebag with her name and a picture of a fairy stenciled on it?

If she has a garden, you could make her a fairy house.
