I made these the other day as kind of my take on an embroidered talisman.

From Wikipedia : A talisman (from Arabic طلسم Tilasm, ultimately from Greek telesma or from the Greek word “telein” which means “to initiate into the mysteries”) is an amulet or other object considered to possess supernatural or magical powers.

They're all 3" or smaller, stitched on 14 count aida with crochet cotton. I kind of just made up the designs as I stitched them. I was looking at pictures from books about alchemy, witchcraft, occult, astrology and that kind of stuff.

If you google nyan cat cross stitch, there's a really cool one on a dark blue background that has the stars in the background, it looks neat.
As far as the fabric bunching, you're probably pulling a little to hard while stitching, I know when I started trying out cross stitch I had the same issue.
