First of all, are you absolutely sure this is plastic?
It sure looks like old ceramic to me and I'm not so sure you can paint over it.

One suggestion that I have is to put up a wallpaper border just above the green tile line that would pull the two colours together. 

Also, it might look really different if it had a good cleaning.

I've never crocheted with having to change colours NOR
have I every had to follow a chart,  but there's always a first!
I'm having late Christmas celebrations at my house this weekend, but I'll certainly give it a try in the New Year.

I can't find where the original person ever put a tut or did she?
OR were you just a really smart crocheter and figured it out?

I'd still love to make one, but I'm just a newbie beginner and would need a pattern to even attempt this.
