1  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Re: Giant Plush Axolotl... the Mexican water monster... Cute and cuddly version! on: November 24, 2008 10:16:02 AM
Thank you so much for your compliments. To come and see that people liked my Axolotl... that made me very happy!!

I still plan on drawing a basic pattern - I haven't forgotten. It won't have measurements... just the shapes of the pieces he's comprised of. Hopefully that will people a good enough idea about how to make their own axolotl.

After making him, I don't know what to make next... suggestions for future things are welcome. ^^

This reminds me of a short story I read years ago! When I read it, I didn't think Axolotls were real, haha. http://www.cis.vt.edu/modernworld/d/axolotl.html
I believe this is the whole story (in English). It was originally written in Spanish by the Argentinean writer Julio Cortazar. If you're curious, I believe the English title of the book it's in is called End Game or something similar Smiley

That's so funny - I bookmarked it recently (haven't read it yet). Somebody posted it on a livejournal community (WTF_Nature) in this post:

There is lots of Axolotl-loving in that thread. <3 And some nice pictures, too.

Oh cute!!! I recognized the critter only because of Craftster. In February, magic otter posted this crochet pattern for an axolotl and I've loved them ever since! Thanks for sharing the plushy version.

That is ADORABLE!!! Holy cow!!! I wish I could knit like that (or rather, knit at all). I also saw another good one here:

I wonder if she's on Craftster. Both of their Axolotls are really, really awesome. <3 <3

He is gorgeous. Kiss We live in Australia and my son has a pet Axolotl. Your stuffy is fantastic and both my kids love it. Cheesy I will keep a look out for a pattern - my son really wants one now.

Wow, having a pet Axolotl - how lucky. Smiley Anyway, I will try to draft up the basic pattern and post it today or tomorrow.  Spreading the Axolotl love is a good thing.

that is the best plush EVER!
i feel so bad after reading your post, because in the early 90s i purchased one in a fish store (i didnt know they were endangered)  Embarrassed they are the most adorable little creatures!

this rocks!

No, don't worry!! They are easy to breed, and flourish in captivity... they are even popular for use in research because they can regenerate lost parts... It's just that  they are disappearing from the wild - they don't have any wild habitat left.

It's kind of like... how there are no more wild dogs or chickens in America; the landscape has changed so much, they can only be kept in captivity (by people) now.

I am glad other people like Axolotls (or at least know what they are). ^^

Beneath the surface of Mexico City's rivers lurks a cute little amphibious salamander which is unique for retaining its larval phase for its entire life. It has a big head, cute little eyes, and frilly pink gills. It is strangely cute - often kept as a pet - but these creatures are quickly disappearing in the wild due to the destruction of their habit (pollution from Mexico City, and commercial fishing, are both deadly to their home below the sea). I am talking about the Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum). Axolotls are a recent addition to IUCN's list of critically endangered species.

I have loved these little guys for a long time, so I decided to do a tribute to him. He is in the form of a big plush (good for cuddling). He is made from soft polar fleece and stuffing. His gils are made of felt. He is not perfect, but I am happy to say he at least bears a resemblance to the actual creature. Smiley

EDIT: Here is a pattern I drew up ^^ (click "save as" or "view image" to view full-size)

Now, pictures:

NOTE: I may re-stuff him (he's kind of lumpy on the inside)... But, I couldn't wait to share it here. ^^ I hope everyone likes him!!

Actual axolotls:

Thanks for looking!! I will post pics if I decide to update him.  Smiley

Oh wow, thanks for the tutorial! I've always loved this dress, screw what the Fashion Police think lol.

Were you present at the Henri David Ball in Philly on Halloween? Or maybe it was another swan dress person hehe.

Hehe... It was probably another Bjork... I was enjoying the Halloween events at MOCAD (Museum of Contemporary Art - Detroit). ^^

If you ever wanted to make another to sell, I would love to buy one. Just keep it in mind. ^^
