1  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Re: Sea Mineral Mittens (Latvian-style mittens, soon to be a free pattern) on: August 07, 2007 04:23:41 AM
any recommended reading for this type of knitting? I can ask my grammy but she lives elsewhere and I'd really like to read up on this type of stuff...

thanks  Grin

the best place to start is Lizbeth Upitis' Latvian Mittens. Smiley

Beauteous! How did you end up hiding the millions of freakin ends? Did you just weave them all in?

thanks!

yup, they are all sewn in on the wrong side of the mitten. Smiley

Want...make...mitte ns...:-)
I love ocean-y-themed things. And if the pattern is available soon, I'll start right away, since I've never really done...intarsia? or is it fair isle? Shows how much I know!
I'll have a few months to get it straight before it gets cold!

Also, I'm thinking, maybe not the best pattern to be trying out intarsia/fair isle? Aw, but I always jump right in the deep end.

Thank you so very very much for taking the time to make the pattern available!

Robin

On the contary, from what I can make out these mittens are not a bad thing to start fair isle with! they aren't a sweater, and there are places were you only use on color, so i'd say go for it. I can't wait to make these myself!

i'm glad you're enjoying the mittens!  i'm more than happy to make the pattern available. Cheesy

yes, small projects like mittens and socks are great places to try out new techniques.  these are technically closer to Fair Isle than intarsia.

I love these mittens--I've been following their progress on your blog (sadly, I can't comment b/c I don't have a google account or blogger).

i do believe that you can post anonymously even if you do not have a google account or a blogger account.  if you click on "other" or "anonymous," you can just put in your name and/or website URL.

or, maybe spillyjane just changed her blog settings recently after you posted your comment?

yes, i changed my settings as soon as i had read that comment.

very very pretty, I like what you did with the cuff!

thanks!  all the different motifs make the cuff the most fun part to knit.

I think the colors are pretty much perfect and I think it's awesome that it's an original pattern!

thanks, i'm glad you like the mittens!

also, i've been meaning to change the settings on my blog, thanks for reminding me!

i'm in love with colourwork and Latvian mittens in particular, and i finally got around to designing a pair of my own with an oceanic feel to them.  after digging through motifs and beating numbers and charts into submission this is what i came up with:

i call them the Sea Mineral mittens.  note the wave patterns throughout, and the sun playing on and under the water, illuminating the sea flora beneath.

here's a detail of the cuff:

and because i know people like these kinds of things, a shot of the inside of the mitten:

this, of course, is only the first mitten--i'll be casting on for the second later today.  i would like to add that i do hope to offer these as a free pattern on my blog in the relatively near future.    i'm on Ravelry too, username "spillyjane" if you'd like to look the mittens (and me) up there as well.

thanks for ogling the mitten! Smiley

i'm glad that my all time favorite talking heads song has a good pattern to go with it.

i'm happy to oblige...it's one of my favourites too.
