1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / Re: Venus Love-Me Chain Lady Skater Dress on: April 19, 2015 08:48:40 AM
Thanks! Cheesy The Lady Skater is an excellent pattern, I highly recommend it. She walks you through lots of tips and tricks, and there's a post on her blog as well that mentions more things that aren't in the pattern. That's how I figured out how to combine sizes! My only issue with it is the instructions for attaching the neckband, which are either written wrong or I just don't understand them, so I basically winged it and it turned out fine.
2  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / Venus Love-Me Chain Lady Skater Dress on: April 18, 2015 10:34:25 PM
Hey everyone! I do believe this is the first thing I've ever shared on the clothing board! I'm not much of a seamstress, but I've been getting interested in making clothes a lot more recently. Aside from a skirt I made in college once, I haven't really done much clothing sewing that wasn't something cobbled together for a cosplay. I don't think making clothes is my main passion but I definitely see myself making more fun statement pieces in the future!

I stumbled upon The Lady Skater pattern a few months back and knew that I wanted to make one. I don't wear a lot of dresses, mostly because I can never find ones that 1) I like, and 2) fit my extremely pear-shaped body. Sad But this dress is perfect for me!

Around the same time, I got super motivated to start dabbling in fabric design on Spoonflower. I was (and still am) trying to build up my portfolio of work a bit, and fabric design is something I've always thought would be fun, especially since Spoonflower is such a great resource for DIY. I love nerdy things, and I love making art based on nerdy things, so I wanted to come up with some designs that reference things from anime or video games but without directly taking artwork from them - for one, you're not allowed to upload images that don't belong to you, but also I wanted the artwork to be more subtle, less in-your-face, and also to lend itself more to fabric. One of the first things that came to mind was Sailor Venus's Love-Me-Chain attack from the Sailor Moon anime. For reference, here is a picture:

And here is the design I came up with!

Then, the ultimate idea hit me...what if I made a super adorable dress in this bold fabric? I wanted something cute to wear to the anime convention I go to every May, but didn't want to make a super-involved cosplay. The idea of making a dress out of anime-inspired fabric I designed myself was too good to pass up!

As you can see, the colors in my design are a lot more vibrant than in the printed fabric - this is just the nature of the way the inks are printed onto the cotton fabric. If you're thinking of ordering from Spoonflower, keep this in mind! Polyester fabrics have the best color profile, but I always prefer to wear cotton so that's what I went with.

I made a prototype out of some plain green knit from Joann's before making this one so I could be sure I was comfortable working with knits and wouldn't mess up my precious custom fabric. The experience went really well, although the fit wasn't perfect. Triple stretch stitch is my new best friend, I highly recommend anyone who doesn't have a serger to use that instead of zig-zag (it eats up a lot of thread though). I originally made the dress size 6 on top and size 8 on bottom (uggggggh being pear-shaped!!!), but for the final version I switched to size 5 on top, 7 on bottom, and I also shortened the bodice by an inch and a half. It turned out GREAT, and the waist seam hides my tummy now instead of drawing attention to it. Tongue I kept the sleeves size 6, but I guess my mind thinks my arms are way bigger than they really are because they turned out baggy, but I think it looks fine. I'm definitely learning a lot about pattern sizing!

I think I'm Lady Skater-ed out for the moment, but I'm still super inspired to make more cute nerdy clothes. I'm on a mission to work out the perfect t-shirt design, so once that happens I'm sure I'll be back to share more things with you. Smiley
3  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Nerdy Merit Badges, Pt 2 on: April 18, 2015 09:48:11 PM
I've been making tons more of these patches lately! Here are some of my favorites.

4  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Re: Hand Stitched Cute & Nerdy "Merit Badges" on: April 05, 2015 09:33:59 PM
OMG I seriously can't believe Mr. X Stitch linked my badges!!! Shocked I also can't believe I haven't seen that until now. So honored :3 I'm also super disappointed I didn't see it until now because in that post he mentions going to North Carolina State University do to a lecture, and I'm just down the road from them. Sad to have missed him!

Sorry for the delay in posting! I received from torimiko a few days ago.

I had requested a cover that would fit Japanese edition manga, since I don't really have a use for composition books but I have lots of manga and wanted a cover for them.

(sorry the images are rotated the wrong way...I thought I had fixed them but then they decided to un-fix themselves... >_<)

The first cover is an absolutely perfect fit! The second one is a little small on one side but it fits my A6 sized planner very nicely. The fabrics are so wonderful! I love them a lot. Especially the suede, it feels so nice. ^__^ Thanks so much torimiko!

I received from Belladune a few days ago! I haven't posted yet because I've been totally wiped training at my new job. At Spoonflower. :3 Yes it is as awesome and amazing as you'd imagine it to be!

Belladune sent me this lovely necklace! It's silk fiber spun around beading wire, with some pretty blue glass beads in the center. The fiber-wrapped "donut" pendant is especially cool! I looooove the colors Cheesy I haven't had a chance to wear it yet, but I'm definitely wearing it tomorrow, which will be my first day back at the bead store since starting my new job (blech, working two jobs sucks, but it's worth it to be able to be doing crafty stuff for a living. :3). I know it's going to be a big hit! I can just see all the customers asking me where I got this unique piece. ^___^

Thanks so much Belladune! Cheesy
7  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Journal Cover Swap (SU CLOSED, SO Mar 16) on: March 09, 2015 04:09:03 PM
Got my materials and plan. Gonna hunker down to sew tonight. Let's hope my plans don't get totally thrown out the window tomorrow - I'm starting my new part-time job at Spoonflower, so I may have total sensory overload and melt my brain. Yes I am just bringing this up to make you all jealous. Tongue

I'm 99% done, but I'm currently without the last little bit of material I need to finish. I was counting on using some special glue from work but because of snow where I live (and more that is probably coming tomorrow...) I'm unsure of when I'll actually be able to go in to use it. If I can go in on Friday I will be able to send on time, otherwise I might have to send on Monday. Hopefully not though!

Edit: False alarm! Got my hands on some glue so I was able to finish today after all. Yay! Cheesy I'm soooo happy with how it turned out. ^__^

Getting major work done today! It's really coming together now. Smiley

I'm also finally making lots of good progress. I was having some major image transfer fail but I finally figured out a workaround and have been chugging along for the past few days. I'm excited to see how it turns out!
