1  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Re: miniature details swap? on: May 21, 2015 01:05:08 PM
Oh wow, I actually have a need for such things for a project! I'm in!
2  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Discussion and Questions / Men's suit coat pattern for a stuffie I've made on: May 20, 2015 08:48:52 PM

So for a project I'm working on, I made a chap out of felt. And made him clothing too, including winter and summer clothing.

But ... I have made four different suit coats and they simply never work out! Has anyone ever made a miniature suit coat? Any pointers to patterns? Or even doll clothing to buy that I could then copy for his specific size?

When I try searching the web for men's suit doll (or various variations of that) I get so much other stuff. I spent hours the other day trying to filter the results and still never found what I needed.

And the projects I've found on Craftster (lovely Sherlock & Whovian fellows in coats) are trench coats, or jackets without a real collar & front lapels that actually fold back flat against the coat, or it's just pictures and no technique mentioned.

Help!

FYI, here's the chappie I'm working on, with one of his failed suits on (I need to make it out of wool felt or wool fabric, for an authentic-ish winter suit coat):

Thanks all!

Hi! I angel-ed for Frosty in this swap, and am posting my photos as I believe her camera is still AWOL.

Frosty had said a half apron would be nice, and a favorite color was forest green, and she liked vintage/retro.

I was clearing out my parents' house these past few months, and finally found my mother's 1949-1950-ish Singer sewing machine that had been missing for years. I also found the Christmas hostess apron that she made in 1947 - and I decided to copy it, in green, for Frosty, using Mom's machine. Retro style, retro machine!

The apron is a backing of material (it's actually even, on the green one, I only spotted it hanging strange in the photo after I mailed it off! Doh!), with netting on top, and the beaded&sequined Pointsettia flower on top of it all, with a ribbon band/ties. (And a little red clip-on&pin flower that she can use on the apron or other spots or in her hair!) Mom and her gang of gal pals all made one in high school. I remember her telling me about the beading, she poked herself SO many times! The machine needs some work so there were some issues sewing on it but I hope Frosty doesn't mind - I couldn't get it in to get it worked on before her apron was due. I loved beading the flower, I watched quite a few 3rdRockFromTheSun reruns while working on it and so there is much laughter sewed in to the flower! Mom used red, green, and white beads but I went clear beads for all sections as I thought it gave it more of a 'frosty' look!  Wink

Here's a friend modeling the aprons:

I'm so happy I got to sew this for Frosty. I enjoyed making sure she got an apron! And it really helped bring Mom back to me in a good way, fond happy memories.

Hey Crescentfresh! You can see the grove your art reminds me of ... http://www.panoramio.com/photo/8492132

The aspen grove is along the Umtanum Creek Trail. The creek feeds in to the Yakima River, which winds winds winds its way down/over/up/across to the Columbia River, which leads to the Pacific Ocean. When I dip my hot hands into the cool creek in the summer, shaded by those aspens, I like to think I'm somehow touching the ocean. Wink

I received from Crescentfresh!

What a lovely swap partner - I am enjoying all her crafted items!

So, first up is a group shot:

She sent a reusable shopping bag, a hoop, and a fantastic painting!  The bag is a great brown/ruby corduroy, sturdy and washable and perfect for bringing home the heavy things like all the jars of pickles I love to snack on!   Wink

Now, just look at this wonderful happy colorful hoopla:

I LOVE THIS!!!!  Bird! Colors! Happy! Love love love. I have it in my office and every time a professor stops by with another (last minute) request, they say "Oh! That's wonderful!" and tell me if I ever don't want it any longer, I can give it to them to hang in their office. AS IF. This puppy is MINE MINE MINE!!!!!

And THEN. Then I got a painting.

I am telling you, she got me SPOT ON.  Autumn! Birches! Sunshine! It reminds me of an aspen grove that a friend and I hike to every year in the Yakima River Valley - we try to go multiple times a year in order to see it in all the seasons, and this makes me think of all those happy trips (including spotting a hawk on a nest in the grove one year!). This is getting a cute little frame this weekend, and will also hang in my office (which, while lovely in that it is an office and not a cubicle, consists of four bare icy blue walls - so all this color is so so perfect for brightening it up!).

THANK YOU thank you thank you.  Perfect swap package!  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin
