It used to be that making something was cheaper than buying something similar that had been manufactured. Not anymore. I regularly see items that I'm sure are significantly less expensive to buy than to make...and they say pharmaceuticals is the most profitable business. Ha! I think it's craft supplies!
My stepmom is a super talented seamstress whose specialty is party dresses. Recently she told me that she'd been out shopping for a first communion dress for her granddaughter and was thrilled to find one in the desired style on sale for $30.
"Mami, aren't you making a dress?", I asked. "Honey", she replied sadly, "The fabric would cost $90."
At this rate I really believe that fewer and fewer people will be experiencing the joy of making something with their hands. Very sad.
