1  Swirly Cookies in Dessert by claraohara on: August 18, 2011 06:04:55 PM
I've been on a baking bender lately!
I saw these cute cookies over on sprinkle bakes (http://www.sprinklebakes.com/2010/01/colorful-spiral-cookies.html) and was desperate to try making them. I printed off the recipe and saw another I couldn't resist (http://www.sprinklebakes.com/)
So here we go!
My strawberry and vanilla swirl cookies...

And they taste pretty darn good!
The hardest part was choosing which sprinkles to roll them in  Cheesy


Then I made the mocha swirl cookies...


But next time I will put a shot of espresso in instead of instant. I'm not a huge fan of the flavour of instant coffee, it's sitting in our kitchen for emergencies only (If we have barely any milk or if, God forbid, the coffee machine explodes)

2  Pecan & Caramel Bars - Sticky Deliciousness! (Recipe) in Dessert by claraohara on: August 10, 2011 06:29:51 PM
This morning I did a little baking, as usual, but tried a recipe from a new cookbook I was given for my birthday.
And I have to say I am impressed! It was so good I was fighting the urge for seconds...... and thirds....... I will not tell you how much I ate.... It's a little naughty  Wink
When I popped my first piece out it was still warm. I ignored the recipe telling me to wait until cool. It was a sticky, gooey mess. But so warm and delicious.



So I thought I'd share the tasty treat love and put the recipe up for all to try. I would probably make this more often if pecans weren't so expensive. On sale last night they were $6 for 150g. Not even enough for the recipe! But it's ok, it was still nutty enough.

I'll be attempting more recipes from the book Cheesy

I love sweet things.
I love pretty sweet things.
I saw this recipe and had to try it...

They look like a popular kiddy treat but taste a thousand times better. Cheesy

And of course what else do you do with block shaped food?

But I do make more healthy, savoury foods too.... I swear!  Wink
I have an awesome vegetarian cookbook I was given when I first went vegetarian.
I haven't had a bad meal from it yet!
One of our favourites is this mushroom quiche with parsley pastry...

Of course I have to inject it with a little extra vege content than the recipe states.
I added sweet potato, pumpkin, asparagus and spinach. Which meant I had to agg another egg or two to fill it up.



(Yes I am too lazy/time restricted to type the recipe up)

I also love to experiment whenever I can.
The other morning I made these wholemeal raspberry dark choc chip pancakes.... *Drools* They were so good.
I was thinking of making them again and writing up the recipe to put on my blog.... Yes? Should I?
Just say yes so I have an excuse to make these (*ahem* EAT these!) again!  Wink

I have never made a layer cake before so I thought, "What the hey, I'll try this one out!"
Two late night baking sessions later.....


My lovely hubby was concerned when he saw the huge bowl of buttercream frosting and the giant spoonfuls I was throwing on in-between layers.
"Stop honey, that's TOO much!!"
Bah, no one comes in the way of me and sugar!
So I kept piling it on.....
As I cleaned up the outside I did wonder if there was going to be thicker frosting than cake....



But I'm pretty happy with how it turned out!

Anyone want to come over for cake?  Cheesy

5  GAZPACHO SOUP! (Vegan+Vegetarian+Super Yum!) in Vegetarian / Vegan by claraohara on: May 19, 2011 07:14:52 PM
I have been a huge fan of an old UK tv show called Red Dwarf.
Since I saw the episode which revolved around Gazpacho Soup I knew I had to try it.
One day while flicking through my favourite vegetarian cookbook (I ramble on about this book a lot on my blog but make up for it by sharing recipes) I saw the recipe for this strange chilled soup.......
So I did it....

This is it before adding the final water to soupify it....
It is so delicious! Like a soupy salad. With the fresh crunch of veges, the bite of garlic and tang of vinegar.
I love it so much I decided to make a gazpacho style salad to have with other meals.

Anyway I thought it would be selfish of me not to share this recipe so here it is:  Wink

Gazpacho Soup
Serves 4-6

Ingredients:

750g Ripe tomatoes
1 Lebanese cucumber, chopped (I used a large continental)
1 Green capsicum, chopped
2-3 Cloves Garlic
1-2 Tablespoons finely chopped black olives (I didn't measure mine, just chucked a lot in!)
1/3 Cup Red or White Wine Vinegar (I used red)
1/4 Cup Olive Oil
1 Tablespoon Tomato Paste

Accompaniments: (I didn't bother with these but maybe next time if I have more time)
1 Onion, finely chopped
1 Red capsicum, finely chopped
2 Spring onions, finely chopped
1 Lebanese cucumber, finely chopped
2 Hard boiled eggs, chopped
Chopped fresh mint or parsley croutons

Directions:

    To peel the tomatoes, score a cross in the base of each tomato. Cover with boiling water for 30 seconds then plunge in to cold water (I used a bowl in the sink with ice). Drain and peel away the skin from the cross.
    Chop the flesh so finely it is almost a puree.
    Mix together the tomato, cucumber, capsicum, garlic, olives, vinegar, oil and tomato paste and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
    Cover and refrigerate for 2-3 hours.
    Use 2-3 cups of chilled water to thin your soup. (I added about 2 as I liked it strong)
    Serve with accompaniments on the side.

Oh boy I have missed Craftster!
These things called babies keep dragging me away  Wink
I have been coerced into moving by my dear husband but sadly doing so I have no craft area at all anymore Sad
All I could bring with me was a tiny box of embroidery stuff but even that I haven't had time to touch.
So anyway, my artistic side is now further unleashed in the kitchen......
Recently I made this cake for my daughter's 2nd birthday....

And some cookies...

I made a key lime pie for the first time and it was amazing!

Another experiment was profiteroles.. I have tried and failed before but this time they were a huge success Smiley

Mmmm I love to bake bready things like these pesto & cheese scrolls


So that's just a few of the so many things I have made over my break from Craftster... Though I have managed to keep up blogging, somehow!

I am so happy I finished this dress!  Grin
Usually I start something, my machine stuffs up or I get impatient, put it down and it ends up in the mountain of half finished projects.....
But not this time!  Cheesy
I found the pattern at an op shop for 5c and fell in love. I just knew I had to use my last bits of mushroom fabric for it.
I used a crisp white cotton drill and the mushroom fabric is a thick quilting cotton.



I even found a perfect coloured zipper to match!





So what do you think?
I initially wanted to make this for my daughter but since it is a size 4 (and looks rather large for that!) it will take a very long time for her to grow into.....So I'll be giving it away on my blog (link in signature) in the next week.
Meanwhile I plan to copy and alter the pattern to fit my girl and whip up a few for when it finally heats up down here!

Here is another present for my pregnant step sister (who is a very colourful person!)
It was just a little doodle I did one day and when I found a blank onesie I just had to try it...


So happy even though he is spewing out a big ol rainbow Tongue

Hey everyone Grin
My oldest step-sister is very pregnant and she loves my crafty stuff so I had to make some goodies for her little girly bump.
I was sewing a whole tonne of stuff but then my tension discs popped and are very broken so I turned to the good ol crochet baby stuff!



I am in love with this yarn-so sad it isn't in the shop anymore Sad

So what do you think? I had to get away from baby pastel colours and my sis is a bright person who loves colour so I thought this suited her  better  Cheesy

At my place it has been getting really cold.
Of course not quite snowing cold, more like thick frost every morning and temperatures going into the negatives (celcius) every night.
(Would not be so bad if our house was properly insulated!)
But it sure provides for some good photo moments!



Our car was covered in ice, good thing my husband was told not to come in to work.









But in the day time when it has warmed up enough to go outside, our demanding little 13month old girl tantrums until we go outside to play in the thick layer of crunchy leaves that cover our front yard...



We had lots of fun! Then we found this guy....



Not so keen on diving in big piles of leaves now.....
