1  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Artist Trading Cards (ATCs) / February ATCs (pic heavy) on: March 06, 2013 01:48:09 PM
After months of lurking and thinking about joining I took the plunge in February and joined the ongoing ATC swap. I am addicted. Plain and simple. Addicted.

These are my first ATCs and the ones received for the February swap. I'll add the rest when they are received. In no particular order...

Sugar Kitty - my 17 year old cat: Watercolor and ink.

Wonky Squares: Watercolor pencils on cloth.

28 - inspired by the movie "28 Days Later": Acrylic.

C3PO: Acrylic and watercolor

OHIO: Watercolor, ink, and collage.

Orange Swirls: Quilled paper. My first go at quilling. I really enjoyed making this and liked it until it was smashed in the mail Sad Lesson learned.

Start the Day Right: Coffee and watercolor.

The I Eye: Water color

The Letter A: Acrylic, yarn and glue

T is for Turtle: watercolor, ink, collage.
2  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Solomon Islands Banana Flower on: January 02, 2013 08:22:34 AM
This isn't a recipe, but more of a tutorial with photos.

This tasty dish was prepared for our newest tradition - New Year's Day Feast, which is customary in the Solomon Islands.

First, look for tight flowers with outer leaves that are as fresh as possible. The tips might be brown and dried out but don't worry about that. Just make sure the leaves don't feel dried out. These are available in Asian markets.

Peel off those outer leaves and discard them. Inside you'll find miniature bananas. I wouldn't recommend tasting one as they are very bitter. Remove these and set aside. Continue peeling the leaves off until they are very light pink and very soft. Keep the mini bananas as you will add them to your dish. Chop them up to the same size as the rest of the flower.

Beginning at the end, chop the flower and turn. When you get to the stem end you may need to discard it if it is woody. You'll know.

This is the key to not having a horrible chalky, bitter, starchy taste - soak in very salty water for at least an hour. You can soak longer, or overnight even, but make sure you do not skip this step! After it has soaked, drain the salt water and rinse well. Squeeze the fresh water out until to see how much starch you are removing. The water you squeeze out should be clear, or almost clear. If it is very white, keep rinsing. When well rinsed, add very hot water and cook until boiling. It doesn't take long to cook, maybe 15 minutes. Just check it until it's tender. I'd imagine the smaller you cut it, the quicker it will cook. After it's done, drain the water. Add coconut milk. Then add curry, chili powder, and 1 diced onion. How much curry or chili powder? As much as it needs Smiley I think we used about a teaspoon of chili powder and a tablespoon of curry for the 6 flowers we cooked. I think. I was called away when my friend added this but that's about what it looked like. Oh! And don't forget some more salt. Just add these things to taste I guess. Cook a little longer over medium heat, maybe 15-30 minutes.

It's a little brownish and I'll admit that it doesn't look particularly appetizing especially when compared to the lovely purple flower you started with. However, I've read that putting the flower in lemon juice immediately after cutting will help deter this oxidation brown. Whatever. It tasted awesome so I could get past the look. It's very tasty with rice and fish.

Details of swap:

Altered Puzzle Pieces R6

Finish that puzzle you started last year or start a new puzzle. You purchase or re-purpose a jigsaw puzzle - it can be wood or cardboard - and send 2 pieces to each partner. You can send two random pieces or two neighboring pieces. You choose the theme or themes, or select "Artist's Choice" and your two pieces are returned to you painted, decorated, embellished and fabulous! Think ATCs or inchies - just in a different configuration. Puzzle pieces can be challenging to alter, but the sky is the limit.

There will be 4 groups of 6. You will have a total of 5 partners to send to and receive from. So you will be sending a minimum of 10 pieces to be altered and will be altering a minimum of 10 pieces for your partners. If you are interested in being in more than one group please let me know on the questionnaire. You may be in a maximum of 3 groups (which would possibly mean sending and receiving 30 pieces total: for 2 groups you would possibly send and receive 20 pieces total). Please understand that multiple groups are contingent on other participants. If not enough people are interested then we will only have the original 4 groups of 6. Also, these multiple groups may not be an even 6 participants depending on the number interested, restrictions due to allergies, and willingness to ship internationally.

This is open to international partners. Since we will be sending envelopes postage shouldn't be too high so please consider being willing to ship internationally for this swap ESPECAILLY if you want to be in multiple groups. Speaking personally, it's pretty neat to have something made by people from all over the world. ***Change to swap: DC#s are encouraged for this swap, but are not required.***

Communication is vital for a fun swap. You are asked to post in the discussion thread at least once a week. You are asked to be timely in responding to pms from your partners and the organizer. When sending pms to the organizer please use the following in the subject line: Altered Puzzle Pieces R6. Please pm the organizer and your partners when: you send your pieces to be altered, you send altered pieces to a partner (please name the partner), and you receive an altered piece from a partner (please name the partner). If you have any questions regarding communication please ask in the discussion thread or send the organizer a pm.

As organizer I reserve the right to refuse any applicant based on poor feedback.

While waiting for partners, you should:

1. Buy or choose a puzzle.

2. Assemble and number the backside of EACH piece to assist you when reassembling your puzzle.

3. Decide if you want the pieces facing the same way or all over the place. Add arrows to backs of pieces to indicate which direction. (On the questionnaire, I will ask if your pieces are one direction or any direction).

4. Choose your theme or themes. Again, this will be asked on the questionnaire.

5. You can write a letter to include with your pieces and make your wishes known - glitter or no glitter, 3-D or no 3-D, words or no words, whatever guidelines you have for your finished pieces. You can also say "Artist's choice with an ocean theme" or "Artist's Choice" - this means each partner will decorate/alter the pieces in his/her own way and you will have a puzzle with a random look.

6. Remember, you will send out your pieces to each partner for altering. You may want to copy or trace pieces before sending out if anything goes missing.

6  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Another Altered Puzzle swap? on: June 14, 2012 07:52:21 AM

(Pieces I sent to MissingWillow)

I just had a fabulous idea for an altered puzzle! I think it will be better if several people (ie swap partners) work on it rather than if I just do it myself. Anyone interested in another round of Altered Puzzle Pieces? I'll organize if there is enough interest Smiley

7  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Make my collectible swap on: September 09, 2011 09:27:09 AM
I've seen it said in several discussions about swapping that if one states, "I want a purple amigurumi octopus" one could end up with several versions of said octopus. So, why don't we do a swap like that? Here's what I'm thinking:

Groups of 4. Each person states 1 item that they collect/want/love and they'll receive 3 from 3 different partners. Medium size items only. Longish crafting time - say 6 weeks.

What do you think? Anyone interested in this?
8  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / Thank you Craftster!! 520 Green Inchies on: April 28, 2011 07:08:04 AM
It's finished! I've been working on this project for over a year! But I have inchies in this that go back to my first inchie swap in 2009.  I have listed all of my former swap partners from various inchie swaps, and also everyone that I had a personal swap with for green inchies. So a big thank you to (in no particular order):

   - If no, understands that a mailing receipt copy is required for this swap: See the note about delivery confirmation.

Details of swap:
Inchies are tiny little works of art. They are exactly 1" by 1". When grouped together make a wonderful work of art. For this swap, each participant will list UP TO 5 themes that they would like to receive. We will be in groups of 6 so each participant will have 5 swap partners. We will make 8 inchies for each partner for a total of 40 inchies. It's entirely up to you how you divide that 8 up by theme. Say one of your partners lists 5 themes: pinup girls, boats, blue, trees, and clouds. You could make 8 inchies based on trees. Or you could make 4 pinup girl inchies and then 1 for each of the other themes. Or maybe you'd rather do 2 blue inchies, 2 boat inchies, 3 tree inchie, 1 cloud inchie, but no pinup girls inchies. Whatever you want!

If you've never made an inchie before you may be wondering just what exactly we're talking about. All you would ever want to know about a inchie can be found here - http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=303188.0 . Thanks Phizzychick for the write up Smiley

When shipping your inchies, please take care to protect them. Have them enclosed in a notecard of some sort or an inside envelope. If they have a lot of texture or 3D material, please be aware that they may require more postage if they cannot go through the sorting machines. Check at the post office if you are concerned.

Participants must also be willing to re-send any lost packages in order to receive positive feedback at the end of the swap. If a package goes "missing" twice, then sending a 3rd time is necessary with a DC number (or receipt for international shipping) will be necessary. This may require sending a package larger than an envelope.

Pictures are highly desired!  Some like to post pics as they receive and others like to post after they received all of them.  You may use a camera or a scanner. Please take photos of your inchies before you send them in case your partner is unable to post them. If you are unable to take pictures, please let your partners know before hand.

(This post is a plagarization of goatgoddess from past Inchies Swaps Smiley )

When PMing the organizer please put INCHIE MY THEME in the subject line. Thanks!
