11  CLOTHING / Costumes: Discussion and Questions / which pattern for ren fest/help me with questions about modifying pattern on: September 15, 2009 08:37:18 PM
ive never been to one before, but this year im going and since im such a devoted craftster i am making my own costume.

i was going to do simplicity 9966, but then thought 2573 would be more comfortable AND easier to make.  i havent sewn anything with a pattern in..... thirteen years.  but then i was thinking that the longer skirt and thicker fabric on 2573 would not be suitable for a fair.  what do yall think?  i want to dress up and awe people with my cool renaissance threads that look slightly different then the run of the mill wench outfit (im not hating on those that wear run of the mill wench outfits.  its awesome that you dress up! its just that im a stuffy prude that likes to be different. *sigh*).

also, here are is a question i had about modifying pattern 2573:
-what other fabric could i use besides brocade or upholstery jaquard, and still stay kind of authentic?
-could i just shorten the train on the pattern by cutting 2 front pieces and using 1 for the back and 1 for the front (and then cutting those side skirt pieces too)?  in an experienced seamstresses's opinion, would that look ok?  it wouldnt mess up the whole line of the dress or anything, right?
-what color would this look good in?  i have a mediteranean(sp, sorry) type coloring Smiley

thanks in advance!

also, this is 2573: http://www.simplicity.com/p-1532-costumes.aspx

its pretty!  you can totally wear it as a necklace too.... the idea of it reminds me of a tatted necklace/laird (is that what the long texas-bowtie type necklaces are called) i saw once on etsy, which made me want to pick up tatting.  hmmm, and that reminds me that i want to pick up tatting, lol!
