I went and got fabric today for one group (I am signed up for two groups as of today!)  This will be for a Christmas quilt for my brother and sister-in-law in 2009.  I am trying to plan ahead!

If anyone is thinking about two groups, go ahead and do it!   Grin

5  Fresh Squeezed Disappearing Nine Patch-or Ode to Summer in Quilting: Completed Projects by audrey1999 on: September 03, 2008 06:34:31 PM
I started this quilt back in June and finally finished the backing and quilting it this past week.  It reminds me of summer with the bright colors and lemons and oranges. Smiley  I used several Moda Fresh Squeezed Charm packs for the front and an assortment of fabrics from Joanne's for the border and the backing.

I have been inspired by so many pieced backs here that I had to try it myself as well.  This was really a lot of fun-laying out the fabric on the floor to see where I wanted it to go and kind of winging it at the same time.  I had to include some of the stars that I made for the friendship star swap too!  I made myself a duplicate of all that I sent.  The bearclaw is a "friendship star gone wrong"-which makes me wonder what that poor star got into last night...

It was also my first try at free motion quilting.  At one point I thought I killed my poor almost vintage Kenmore, but it is back to normal now. Smiley

I haven't mastered the stitch control using my foot pedal and maneuvering the fabric at the same time.  My machine only has 4 stich sizes anyway and that all depends on how fast you are trying to go.  I have a tendency to put the pedal to metal when sewing, but I drive like a "granny" according to my husband.  I find the contrast quite amusing. I am kind of feeling naughty for posting these pictures, but chinarockfishakm said it was okay, so proceed at your own risk!  I know I love to see what others are doing and it provides creative inspiration for me along the way.

So here is what I have so far!  Are you sure you want to proceed?  Really, it seems so far that most of my blocks will have slight discrepancies from each other due to the fabric so it will still be a surprise when you receive.

Colorado!

This is where I live now.  I was not raised here, but moved here a few years ago-2004.  I went rafting down the Colorado River out of Glenwood Springs a few years ago.  I think it was 2005.  It looked a lot like this fabric which is pretty remarkable.  The blocks do look better in person, they are not as grainey as they appear and they are square!  I promise.  That goes for all of them.
A few close ups...

Montana!
For Montana I found this great center fabric! I love the pictures of the mountains and the animals. What made it even better, is that it is from the "Big Sky Country" line from SouthSeas Imports. "Big Sky Country" is a nickname for Montana. How perfect is that! The background fabric is Moose Lake from Exclusively Quilters Collection.  A couple of summers ago, i was lucky enough to get to go to Yellowstone (which is in Wyoming and a little of Montana) and up into a smidgen of Montana.  This fabric reminded me of our trip-which was pretty cool.  The sky here does seem huge.  It fills one horizon west to the other horizon east- and it seems to go farther up (as into the sky itself) as well.  It is absolutely beautiful.

Florida: which is one of the blocks we are doing on our own...
This is my Florida block for the 50 States Quilt. I chose the dolphins because when I was young we would go to my Great Uncle William's cabin in the Bay outside of Fort Walton, FL. He had a really long pier that went out into the bay where you could see dolphins swim by all the time. I liked the orange batik because it reminds me of sun rays, warmth, and oranges.

So hopefully, since I went first you won't all think they stink.  I am beginning to have a little anxiety but I would rather it be in the beginning when I can change things than later, so there you go!

It is funny how this swap catches the minds of others, I started posting about it on my blog and how i was stuck for Oregon, Utah, and North Carolina and someone from North Carolina that had this awesome fabric sent it to me!  I am going to send her fabric, but she didn't want it before she sent.  Isn't that neat?

9  Re: 50 States Block Swap - CLOSED - Send By October 6th in ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED by audrey1999 on: August 05, 2008 04:10:39 PM
I figured I could share this since we are all doing our own and it isn't a spoiler.  Also, I have started posting my blocks on my blog as I make them because I get a little excited and have to share.  DO NOT LOOK IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED!!!  The first thing that will pop up is Florida, so you will still have a chance to turn away.Smiley  Anyway, this is sort of what I am typing up as I go along to go with the blocks I make-a short description of the fabric and why i chose it.  They don't all have a little story-some will just have facts if I have not visited that state. I am lucky because I have been to a lot of the states I have been assigned.

Is this what we are supposed to be doing, Chinarockfishakm?

Here is my description:
This is Florida.  It is from Robert Kaufman's Island Sanctuary. I picked it up as a fat quarter at a local quilt shop. When I saw it, I immediately thought Florida.

When I was young, my family would go visit family at Uncle William's cabin on the bay outside of Ft. Walton, FL. He had this really long pier that extended out into the bay. There were all these crab cages hanging off the side and benches at the very end. You could sit out there and watch dolphins go up and down the bay, jumping up and down, from the pier. It was very, very cool.

I chose the orange batik because it reminds me of sun rays and heat. It also reminds me of oranges. I like the contrast between the cool blue and warm orange as well. Plus, they are the colors of the best college football team ever. (Auburn University)

10  Re: yo yo quilt in Quilting: Discussion and Questions by audrey1999 on: July 15, 2008 08:53:20 PM
I am also working on a yo yo quilt!  I have always been told that the gathers go up (right side of the quilt) but it is your quilt so how you display it is completely up to you!  I say go with what you like best.

Here is a pic of mine so far:

The squares are 4x4 yo yos and I am at around 185 4x4 squares-not joined into a finished piece yet.  Good luck with yours!  They take a while, but I think it will be worth it.  I like the gathers up on mine.
