121  CLOTHING / Clothing for Curvaceous Craftsters: Completed Projects / Re: First Post.... Fun Retro Dress (Butterick 4790) on: September 07, 2006 07:08:09 PM
rhodora55--  This is actually REALLY comfy to wear.  Especially good for the days when nothing seems to fit right.  With just a button in the back and two in the front you can't really go wrong!

francie pants-- THe first time I wore the dress I knew that I would have to be careful with the snaps, but let's just say there was an incident involving me getting out of my car and bending over to grab my purse and the whole thing came undone... in a parkinglot full of people.  I turned 5 shades of red and then laughed so hard I couldn't stop.

I'm actually going to be making the dress again, but this time I'm going to fancy it up a bit.  It's going to be in navy satin and I'm going to switch up the neckline a little bit--make it narrower but a little deeper.  Closure's going to have to be different, too Smiley

Awww, thank you, moondeela!  I'd definitely give it the pattern a try if I were you.

Mosquito, I love your Fred and Ginger avatar Smiley

You can't really tell from the picture, but there are two buttons on the front of the dress that are supposed to be there for decoration with snaps on the inside.  I couldn't ever get the snaps to stay closed, so I actually made buttonholes (the horror!  the horror!)  But I'd think hooks and eyes would work almost as well.

Thank you so much everybody!  I really appreciate all the compliments Smiley  Such a fun dress to make, too...

crafty_dame -- the dress took about 5 yards of fabric, but most of it was for the full circle skirt.  You could cut out a lot of it by reducing the fullness.  Oh--and I normally can't afford Butterick patterns, either.  I waited until there was a sale and bought a few in the Retro line.

Hey all!

I've been on Craftster for 2 years, sewing since I was a teenager, but (like a lot of curvier and plus-sized women) have always had a bit of trouble finding patterns that I've really liked or could get to fit me withotu a ton of altering.

Wellll.... I found one!  This is a Retro Butterick pattern that I picked up because of my love of vintage clothing, the fact that the sizing went up to their size 22, and it was labelled "Fast & Easy."  The hardest part in this was hemming the circle skirt (I have no patience...)

After the ramble, here are a few pics.... please excuse the wrinkles in the dress.  I had gone on a picnic earlier that day with my boyfriend.  Ya know how that goes  Wink

Questions/ Comments are always welcome!
