1  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Discussion and Questions / Envelope clutch purses supported with plastic canvas on: April 09, 2008 09:11:04 AM
I am experimenting with plastic canvas and would love any insight to working with it. I am trying to make a lined, envelope clutch that has plastic canvas to give it more structure. Normally, I use interfacing but have found that it just doesn't hold up well.

My pattern is pretty simple. I cut a rectangle of cloth of the exterior fabric and a matching rectangle in the lining. I fold the fabric up two thirds of the length and sew up the sides on the exterior. For the lining, I sew up one side completely, and then only the top half of the second side. I then put the two pieces together and sew them up.  I then turn the bag right side out by pulling the material through the hole left in the lining.

I am having trouble figuring out how to work in the plastic canvas. Do you think I can leave the top seam open between the lining and the exterior and slide the canvas in? Should I have one continuous piece or cut it into thirds so it folds better?

I hope this makes sense and would love to hear of any one's experience working with plastic canvas.
2  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Selling Crafts on Etsy.com / An Etsy Seller Using My Business Name on: February 29, 2008 11:47:13 AM
I would love to get some other opinions about a situation. I have a website where I sell handmade handbags and a blog where I document my current projects. I do not sell on Etsy. My friend did a search for my site and an Etsy seller with the same name came up. My business is my unusual lastname + designs, which is also my domain name and part of my blog address as well. This seller is selling handmade earrings with beads so we aren't in competition with eachother on products.  I don't know if there has been any confusion since she just set up her store last week.

Is there anything I can do or should I just suck it up and hope there isn't any confusion. I have a pretty good understanding of intellectual property law so I know I don't have a strong legal argument to make her stop using it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
