If you're looking for nifty and thrifty in SF, I suggest spending a day just wandering through the Haight/Ashbury area.
Don't limit yourself to the intersection, either. That whole area is sweet.

If you're looking for heaven in a Fabric store, I suggest Britex in Union Square. It's on Geary, and I swear you'll fall in love. Cheesy

While Britex is awesome, I find it to be mostly overpriced. For fabric, I like Discount Fabrics on Haight near Masonic. Mendel's Far Out Fabric on Haight is also fun.

Also try out Flax on Market and Valencia.
