You should try special effects dye, it always lasted really well when I had pink.
You bleach your hair first, wash out the bleach, DON'T put conditioner in it. Then blow-dry it and chuck a load of the dye on (the dryer and more dead your hair is the more porus it is so it sucks the dye up better). Because it's vegetable based dye you can leave it on as long as you want, I think I used to leave it for 4 or 5 hours in the evening, and then just wash it out and condition as normal.
