1  California / California: South / looking for crafty times in mid-city LA on: January 20, 2014 09:59:48 PM
Just wondering if there are any folks who like to get together for crafty hanging out and instigating each other to make stuff.
2  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / fun with photo editing (pic heavy) on: May 14, 2009 01:55:57 PM
I am super new to the whole realm of photo editing, and have been playing around with it lately using mainly elements and picasa.  I am finding it quite fun and love the dream-like qualities I can impose on otherwise "ok" images.  I love beautiful realistic photos that haven't been enhanced, and think it takes quite a bit of talent or at least trial and error to achieve those.  However, with some fearless clicking and manipulating, I can enter this really bizarrely colored world where I wish I could live aaallll the time  Cheesy:

Thanks for looking. Smiley
3  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / hand made rugs LOTS of pics on: April 27, 2009 06:32:55 AM
So, my 95 year old mother-in-law just had her first art opening!  I didn't make anything here in this post, but I believe it is truly craftster-worthy and I've seen folks post stuff that their friend or relative made, so I thought I'd go ahead and share.  Hope this is ok!

Anyway:  Joy began hooking rugs in the 1940's and did it for almost 50 years!  This is *not* the latch hooking.  This is the kind of hooking where you cut wool fabric into long strips that are about 1/4 " wide (or even narrower), and work them continuously and very close together into burlap fabric, using a hook that somewhat resembles a crochet hook.  The fabric is not knotted in any way.  You would think they would unravel but you hook them in so tightly they somehow stay together.

My sister in law organized a show for Joy at the retirement home where she lives.  It was very well attended.  This is an old-school art/craft that really deserves to be carried on.  I've given it a try and it really is very easy, just kind of time consuming if you are doing a big project, but no more so than most of the other kinds of needle/hooked arts - it just takes a loooong time to make a whole rug because they are so big.  However, Joy has also done pillows and wall hangings this way too, although I don't have any pictures of those.

Ok! Smiley

This is one of my favorites, all rainbow-y.  It's about 2 1/2 feet by 3 1/2 feet.

This one is sort of a sampler-style.  Made in the 1950's, it's one of her more wild-and-crazy creations, very uncharacteristic of conventional styles.  Everyone should cut loose from time to time!  (note the owl!)  This one is her own design, and all of the motifs have a very personal meaning - her husband played the violin, she loves flowers and nature and her cat, and even the saturn references her love for astronomy!  It's like cave paintings, a real historical record of her life.  Very inspirational and of course priceless to her family.

Here's a detail of it so you can see all the individual loops.  Always sign your work! Smiley

Here is one that is more traditional, using a purchased pattern, as she did with many of her rugs.  However, she rarely followed color charts, preferring to use her own combinations.  Oh and she dyed most of her own wool strips on top of the stove. Smiley

This one's a teeny bit blurry but if you look at the motif on the left/center you can see her unorthodox use of color - the gradated pink/purple/green is apparently considered pretty darn kooky for that time period! Cheesy

This is just for scale:

And here are some details:

This one was everyone's favorite:

And a detail of it, I just couldn't get a good enough close up to show the pattern and all the gazillions of individual loops at the same time. Tongue

Here you can see some of her larger works - real room-sized beauties, that would usually take her a year to make, working for a few hours many evenings (especially in the winter  Smiley )  During the day she ran an inn with her husband.  (and yes, they have all been walked on continuously, some for 50 years!)

And here are some of the smaller ones displayed on a table.  On second thought maybe I should have cropped this one a bit.  That fine figure of a man is my husband, or part of him any way. Wink

I repeat:  ALWAYS SIGN YOUR WORK!  Including the date, because when you are 95 years old and the world is clammoring for details on your amazing work, you won't remember everything! Wink

Thanks for checking out the work of a very venerable Craftster Lady - any feedback I bring to her will be a joy to Joy, I am sure. Smiley
4  GLASS CRAFTS / Glass Crafts: Completed Projects / A Heart That Has Been Broken Wide Open... on: January 24, 2009 08:38:11 AM
...Can Hold The Entire World.

This is a sort of ungrouted mosaic/painted window made with tiny scraps from stained glass projects, marbles and globs, and broken auto glass that I swept up out of a dumpster.

I did a little painting on the window with glass paints, then glued on the glass scraps in what I think sort of resembles an approximate heart shape that has been kind of "exploded".  I covered the aluminum frame with some metallic tape and wrote this, which I read somewhere long ago and can't figure out who said it originally:

"A heart that has been broken wide open can hold the entire world"

In this one you can see a little better how the auto glass looks.

It's very sparkly in the light and apropos to this season of Love.... Smiley

Thanks for looking and here's wishing some Love to All, especially those who have had their heart broken.  (wait, isn't that everyone? Wink)

5  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Valentine's Classroom Card Exchange on: January 09, 2009 03:46:50 PM
Welcome to the Gallery!  Below is a list of all the swappers and who you are sending to and receiving from.

HERE IS A FANTASTIC IDEA FROM ONE OF OUR SWAPPERS!

This is a request that each swapper do the following:
1. Select and copy your name and list of partners
2. reply into this thread, and paste your list there
3. As you recieve your cards, you can modify your post, perhaps by changing the color of your partners name that you receive from

In this way we could keep track of all the cards received.

This is just a request, because I realize that I can't impose new rules on you all in mid-swap
So I guess it's up to each of you to decide if this is a good idea and do-able for you.  I'll set the example and do the first one. Smiley

Otherwise, remember that you are not required to post pictures of everything you receive, but feel free to post as many as you can!  And, you are still required to pm me when you receive.  You don't have to do that one all at once, obviously, you can group your "received" cards into a pm to me as you see fit.

6  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / Talk About The Swap Process / how often should swap organizers check in or respond? on: January 03, 2009 09:26:02 AM
I need a reality check.
What is generally considered a "reasonable" amount of time between check-ins by a swap organizer?
I have been thinking that a couple of days is a quite reasonable length of time to wait for a response if I have a question or to sign someone in to a swap I am organizing, etc.
When I am organizing a swap, I plan it so that I know I will be spending extra time on craftster during that labor-intensive sign-up period, but truthfully I think that getting onto craftster every couple of days fits the definition of "reasonable".  Am I totally out of touch?
I have been informed that some swappers can feel "ignored" if they don't hear back from their swap organizer within the day or even within hours!  I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings here, but I think that's a bit demanding and I'd hate to think that I as a swap organizer might possibly  be contributing to swap moderators potentially being given a heavier work load because swappers might be pestering them if I haven't booked someone into a swap (or given feedback, or answered a question or something) on the same day they send me their info or question or whatever.  This is all purely hypothetical at this point, I think, but I was so shocked to hear that this sort of thing might even happen, and I really want to know whether my ideas of what's reasonable are generally considered realistic or not.
Am I living in the stone age here, to assume that it is perfectly reasonable if not everyone checks in to craftster at intervals of several hours, or even every single day, even swap organizers?
Thanks for any ideas or input anyone might have on this subject - moderators, organizers, swappers, or anyone otherwise interested. Smiley

Welcome to the Valentine's Classroom Card Exchange Swap!!
Signups January 1-January 8, 2009
Send outs by February 5, 2009
Please send out all your cards on the same day, and PM organizer when you do so!

Here is our original discussion thread:
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=283581.0

This will be a swap in which everyone makes one card for everyone else in the swap, just like in elementary school where you brought in a card for everyone in the class.  The maximum number of swappers will be 24.

You may specify a maximum number of cards to send that is less than 24 and I promise I will do my best to match you up with that number of partners, but I cannot guarantee that I will be able to match you up with that exact number!

Since you can't get a DC number for regular envelopes, feedback will be based on if your partners recieved or not. If your card(s) is/are not recieved after two weeks you will need to send another one to avoid negative feedback.

Remember, you may be required to make and send more cards if any that you send are lost in the mail.

You can make whatever kinds of cards you are inspired to make, as plain or as fancy as you'd like.  You can make them production-line style.  The only rule is to make something that you would like to receive!  Any materials are acceptable although I expect papercrafts might rule this swap.  No stalking required.  Whatever style you like to make is fine - jokes, doily-victorian, sappy, corny, goofy, fun, dark, anatomical, creepy-cute, whatever makes your heart beat faster!

A requirement of this swap is that you MUST pm me the date that you mailed your cards!  Please mail them all on the SAME day because it will be very hard for me to keep track of multiple swappers sending multiple cards on multiple days!

IF YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE, REMEMBER TO SEND YOUR INFO TO ORGANIZER VIA PRIVATE MESSAGE AND NOT TO REPLY WITH IT HERE.

Also remember to read the Swap Info Guide to find out how to ship your item and other details about participating in a swap.

Important note!!!!!!!!!
I've been asked by a moderator to let you all know up front that sometimes I will go for a couple of days without getting onto craftster, because sometimes swappers feel they need contact or response within hours of trying to reach their swap organizer.  So, just for complete transparancy and so there is no confusion or misunderstanding here... *Most* of the time I am able to at least check in daily, sometimes morning and evening.  But ocasionally I will actually go a couple of days without being online at all. (!)  It's true. I confess that I have an actual life outside of craftster.  I hope this doesn't have a negative impact on anyone here.  Thanks for your understanding. Smiley

8  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / winter holiday village on: December 27, 2008 05:43:45 PM
Here are some little houses and trees that I made for my version of a tabletop "Christmas Village"

This house is made out of playing cards that I decorated first then cut slots into for assembling

The forest is crocheted from all kinds of fun fur and other novelty yarns.

This house is just a purchased little wooden house that I painted

These are some of the inhabitants of my little village, singing Dahoo Doray around the largest tree.  I didn't really make them.

Happy Christmasolstahanuk wanzaka everyone. Smiley

9  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Hula Hoop Christmas Tree on: December 27, 2008 05:23:40 PM
So last year we started a new family tradition of making an "alternative" Christmas tree.  This year we decided to use the various sized hula hoops we had laying around, and made a couple more so we could have the correct range of sizes.  We strung them together with wire and there it is - for a trunk we used our goleden lion statue:

The whole thing is suspended from a hook in the ceiling, from which we hung a chandelier, which forms the top of the tree.

Then each hoop gets larger as you go down...

...until you get to the final large hoop on the bottom.

I covered all the hoops with wide ribbon and tied most of the ornaments on to the hoops with ribbon as well.

Thanks for looking at our kooky tree. Smiley
10  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / Talk About The Swap Process / swapping without delivery confirmation? on: December 24, 2008 04:41:41 PM
I'm about to start a valentine's card swap, and since I'm relatively new as an organizer, I'm curious about holding a swap that does *not* require a DCN.  I anticipate that we will be sending paper or lightweight cards to each other that just require a regular envelope.  Delivery confirmation seems kind of like overkill, so does it make sense to just say "if your cards aren't received by the other swappers in your group, you will be required to re-send"?

Thanks for any ideas and happy Christmasolstihanuk wanzaka. Smiley
