if you don't have much money (or you just don't want to buy stuff all the time while a lot gets thrown away) dumpsters (containers) of stores like Hema and Blokker are a good place to find crafty stuff. I've found tule-fabric, beads, frames (of which the glass was NOT broken), canvasses (to paint on), nylon thread, crafty kids scissors, paper, and lots of other things. not too mention a hammock, a big beautiful mirror (that my dumpster friend now has), several sunshades/porasols, etc.
23  CITY GUIDES FOR CRAFTSTERS / EUROPE / Re: Any crafty Expats/English speakers in Brussels? on: October 19, 2008 07:00:39 AM
Annez,
if i would live in Brussels, i'd immediately say yes to starting/joining a craft club! but now i don't know. i live a bit far from brussels.

about alternative culture: it does exist here, but it's just not that visible or well-known. personally i think most interesting alternative culture takes place in squats.

for example in Brussels check out:
-Salle RTT
-le 123 squat: Rue Royale 123
-the anarchist library Acrata
-www.electrastar.be
-Recyclart
-mini-Ladyfest
-La Compilotque
-Scum Grrrls zine

in Gent:
-queer kafees, Queer Gazet zine and other stuff by www.queerilla.be
-lots of squats and voks (people's kitchen?)
-Assez: anarchist social centre
-anarchist library Infotheek

in Antwerp
-Scheld'Apen: cultural youth house
-feminist caf www.feminisme.be/fcpoppesnor
-De Ploeg / Klooster / Kievitje, ex-squat near central train station, now used to organise cultural and social events and shelter
-Gynaika: organisation for women artists
-Bolwerk: one-person collective that sets up very cool art projects

in Hasselt:
-Zaal Belgi: cultural space
-squat that sometimes has interesting events like DIY day (!): http://rgcollectief.110mb.com/diydag.html organised by the local riot grrrl collectiev of which i'm a member

in Lige:
-new squat La Chauve Souris: http://ovl.indymedia.org/news/2008/10/24053.php
-La Zone

there's lots more, but this can be a start

by dress material, do you mean fabric and yarn? there's 't Wolwinkeltje in Leuven too, but their fabrics are a bit expensive. they have very lovely fabrics and yarn though! in Hemp-made in Leuven they sell organic hemp yarn and fabric, but you have to ask them about it in advance, because it's not always all in the store.
in Brussels i think there are some markets with cheap fabrics and probably some stores too.
I've seen several fabric stores in Gent (2 in Ledeberg/Gentbrugge) but I don't know their names nor addresses. i've seen a sewing machine store in Ledeberg/Gentbrugge too.
I heard that in Mechelen there is a store by the same owners as Stoffenpaleis in Hasselt.
Hand-made in Hasselt has been closed since a while.
25  CITY GUIDES FOR CRAFTSTERS / EUROPE / DIY day in Belgium on: October 19, 2008 06:33:24 AM
Hi,

some friends and me are putting together a DIY day. it's called "buy nothing, make something" and it takes place on November 15th in Hasselt, Belgium. that's 2 weeks before "buy nothing day", an international anti-consumerist action day.
so we're going to do several workshops on the DIY day, like recycling clothes, making wooden sculptures, self-publishing, etc. you can find some more info here: http://rgcollectief.110mb.com/diydag.html (in Dutch) and there will be updates when the program is confirmed.

maybe see you there?
26  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / menstruation cloth pads tutorial on: October 19, 2008 06:25:03 AM
I like that there's so much interest in sewing pads here!

Here is a tutorial I made a little while ago:

i hope it's a bit clear...
The measurements are in centimeters and probably could be altered, depending on your underwear and all...

I'm mostly using pads made from bath cloth fabric now (store bought  Embarrassed ) because they don't leak easily. they don't have any "protective" layer and don't need it. i use thinner self-made cotton fabric pads for low flow days. i usually rinse them after use, then machine wash. it's easy, you don't have to worry about running to the store to buy new pads.
i just need to make a wet bag now...
