Fabric definitely won't work - the cream will get through the weave and etch there also.  The only thing I have used contact paper (which I have found pretty ugly contact paper at the dollar store).  But then you have to cut out the design.

I know some people's skin is more acidic than others.  That may be a reason why some turn black and some don't.  I wonder if you coat them in clear fingernail polish it would help. Huh
