4  HOME SWEET HOME / Pet-Related Crafts: Completed Projects / Sock monkey on: December 20, 2010 06:17:36 PM
For Christmas this year I decided to make our Bouvier Luna a sock monkey. I double stitched everything using the machine for durability (not an easy feat with a sock), and omitted the stuffing. Rather, I loosely stuffed with knotted strips of a t-shirt and a tennis ball for the head.

I am excited for her reaction Christmas morning!

I ended up giving Luna her present on Christmas Eve -- she loved it!

7  HOME SWEET HOME / Pet-Related Crafts: Completed Projects / Wool Dog Coats on: November 07, 2010 09:50:59 PM
Last year, after the death of my parents long time neighbour, I was given several full length wool skirts. Though beautiful, and at one time very expensive, no one was interested in them as skirts, therefore they became dog coats for Luna (Bouvier), Brinkley (Doxie-??), and Odie (Min-Pin X Chihuahua).

I used a McCall pattern, modified slightly for the various versions. I made Luna one jacket, Brinkley three, and Odie two.
8  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Re: Odie the sock monkey on: November 06, 2010 08:14:54 AM
I found a wool sweater! It's a tweedy 2x2 rib, and in a flecked reddish brown. Large size, and long! Perfect for the size of Caleb. That's my friend's dog. He's a 12 Y.O. Pit Bull. Now to find his measurements I took last year. I probably won't make ears on it, but thanks for the sweater idea! I was just going to use fleece. K.

Good luck with it! I have used fleece and wool (fabric and knit) and find that wool by far is the warmest. Within minutes of putting on Odie's sweater it is roasty to the touch! For a small dog I highly recommend using a wool sock, I was surprised how quickly it became a sweater.

Thanks for all the positive feedback!

i LOVEELOVELOVE the fact that you entered the costume you made your dog! i used to be iffy on pets wearing clothes...but after making a friend who has a tiny poodle thing, i realized that some dogs would absolutely freeze without a "sweater" or "dress." her dog even prefers to wear clothes!

I also was unsure of dog clothing until my husband and I adopted Odie (and his 'brother' Brinkley, they were surrendered after their owners death). They were 10+ years old when we adopted them, and perpetually cold. The first time I held up a dog shirt Odie and Brinkley knew exactly what to do. Since they wear shirts year long, tank tops in the summer and sweaters in the winter!
