I'm completely new to crocheting anything other than blankets that I've never used a pattern for, so I have some questions. Sorry if you get asked these all the time. I tried searching, but had no luck.
I'm (hopefully) going to make a sweater for my son, but without even touching a single piece of yarn, I'm already having problems. The pattern called for DK weight yarn, and I couldn't find anything that said that (at Robert's). So I called a friend who "googled" it and said it was worsted weight. So I bought a medium worsted weight yarn. Upon looking it up myself it looks like I should have gotten a 3 not a 4. Is this a big problem? Will it just make my finished project bigger?
Problem two is that the pattern calls for a G hook and for the life of me, I can't find mine. I don't live that close to a store to buy one and really need to get going on this, so what happens if I use a different hook? Again, will it just make the final product larger, if I use a larger hook?
I guess maybe I should just crochet up a bit to get a gauge and see if it matches the pattern (doubt I used those terms right, but I think that's the basic idea).
Any advice? I've got to do this! I want it done before my sons blessing on the 15th of Feb. and everyone has just laughed when I mention this. I'm notorious for not finishing things, but this I'm going to do. It means a lot to me.
Any advice? Tips? Anyone want to make it for me and I can just pretend it was me?
