1  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / September Birthday Swap? on: August 21, 2008 11:32:26 AM
Since next week is the last full week (!) of August, I thought I'd see if there's any interest in a September birthday swap? It would work the same as this month's round; the link is in my sig. Smiley

I really like the idea of the birthday swaps, and I'd like to keep them going, if there's any interest!

3  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / August 2008 Ongoing Birthday Swap [Sign ups Jul 29--Aug 31] on: July 29, 2008 01:47:23 PM
PLEASE READ ALL RULES BEFORE YOU SEND YOUR INFO. SOME RULES HAVE BEEN CHANGED.

ALL BIRTHDAY BABES WHO POST A BIRTHDAY WISH LIST MUST FULFILL A BIRTHDAY WISH OF AT LEAST ONE FELLOW BIRTHDAY BABE. In other words, if you post a list and receive a gift, you must send at least one gift. Non-birthday craftsters may still send "unconditionally." Unconditionally in this swap means if someone fulfills one of your birthday wishes, you will send them a thank you note via snail mail. PM's or thank you posts do not count as thank you notes. Negative feedback will be given for those who post lists and receive, but never send. Please read below for the exact details. They are in BOLD.

PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR LIST UNTIL I SEND YOU A PM SAYING TO DO SO.

Swap name: August 2008 Ongoing Birthday Swap
Craftster member who is organizing this swap: DIY ho

FOR POSTING BIRTHDAY LISTS Sign-up date range:  July 29 - Aug. 31, 2008
FOR CHOOSING A BIRTHDAY WISH TO FULFILL Sign-up date range:  July 29 - Aug 31, 2008
DATE TO SEND ITEMS BY:  2 weeks after you claim someone unless other arrangements are made ahead of time

Limited to a certain number of people?: No.
Restricted to people who all live in the same country? No.
You must be 13 years old to swap.

Swap Organizer himself/herself meets these conditions:
- Has fully read the Swap Info Guide: YES
- Has successfully completed two swaps as a participant: YES
- Is not organizing more than three swaps right now: YES
- Will recruit a co-organizer or give all details to a Swap Moderator if this swap has more than 25 participants: YES

Swap Organizer will check each participant to make sure they meet these conditions:
- Has been a member for at least one month: YES
- Has posted at least 15 times: YES
- Has completed one swap successfully before signing up for multiple swaps at a time: YES
- Is not currently signed up for more than five swaps: YES
- Does not have any negative feedback: YES

Details of swap:  This swap was organized so everyone can get something crafty for their birthday!  Please read the guidelines carefully.

*This is a medium item swap. A medium item is defined as a craft or recon etc that takes you two hours to complete OR 20$ worth of Store Bought Items. (If bought from a thrift store, estimate at what it would have cost new.) However you may also substitute a few small items for a medium.
    * If your birthday is in August, then you can post your birthday wish list for this month. To do that, you must first PM me with the Swap questionnaire filled out.
    * Once you have been approved, you may post your list of things that you would want to receive. You can have as many items on your list as you want to, but the minimum is 5. The more you have, the better are the chances to get claimed. Please try to have a good mix of items on your list. The last wish you will post is "a surprise."  Then you will post a bio about yourself. Please state at the beginning of your list where you are located.  Some people absolutely cannot send to people overseas for any number of reasons. We need to respect this valid concern. Also, please list any allergies or dislikes at the beginning of your post. Type allergies in red if they are severe.
    * Please post lists only. No discussion on this thread please.
    * Everyone will then go through the lists and choose a craftster they want to send a birthday gift to. Your birthday does not have to be in August for you to craft for someone! If you want to choose someone, just PM me with your info (including your address, please), who you want to craft for, what item, and I will send you their address.
    * When you choose to fulfill a birthday wish, PM both me (DIY ho) AND the chosen craftster. After that you have 2 weeks to get the item out the door unless you communicate in advance that something will take a bit longer. If two weeks pass, and I don't hear anything from youyou guessed it, negative feedback!
        * It is super important for everyone to keep good communication. It is REQUIRED that you PM me when you've sent and of course, don't forget the DC#. It is REQUIRED that when you receive, you PM me and publicly announce in the gallery (even if you don't have pictures).
    * You can choose to craft for as many people as you like, but you cannot "owe" more than 2 things. If you are a newbie and this is your first swap, you must successfully send once and the package must be received before choosing again.
    * REMEMBER THAT YOU WON'T NECESSARILY GET AS MANY PRESENTS AS YOU SEND. IT'S ALSO POSSIBLE THAT NOBODY CLAIMS YOU. In that case, you WON'T get an angel. The angels replace only flakers and lost packages.
*When one of your items is chosen, please cross it out so that it is easier for others to see what has been chosen. It wouldn't hurt to thank the person at this time either.

If you have any more questions or suggestions, you can send me a PM with "August Birthday Swap" in the subject line.

4  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Another bean mosaic; for my kitchen this time! on: July 21, 2008 10:11:45 PM
Back in April I entered this bean mosaic in the Craftster Challenge 26, a dollar store challenge. I was fairly happy with it, since it was my first try at this, but I wanted to give it another go. Using the same beans as before (navy beans, black beans, and split peas) with the addition of unpopped corn kernals, I made this...

Sorry for the blurry pic; I'll take a better shot in daylight tomorrow.

This frame is 4x6", also found at the local dollar store.

I didn't intend for the yellow and green bits to look like flowers, but that's okay. I took progress shots in case anyone's interested. Thanks for looking! Comments appreciated. Smiley
5  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / August Ongoing Birthday Swap? on: July 17, 2008 10:06:19 AM
I was thinking of hosting a swap like the Ongoing Birthday Swap, only with July and August together since there's so little of July left. I think the last round was in May. If there's enough interest, I want to get it going again, and keep it up every month. This would hopefully be the only one that combined two months in one swap.

For the ongoing style birthday swap, your birthday doesn't have to be in the specified month to send a birthday treat to someone. However, if you ARE a birthday babe (and want to post a list, to receive) you also have to SEND to another birthday babe. Wink

So, anyone with a July or August b-day? Or just feeling generous? Grin

I can always wait for August if you guys would prefer!
6  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Newbie knitter... OW! on: June 16, 2008 08:04:28 PM
Hi, knitters! I just started knitting (again, sort of) tonight. I tried knitting before with knittinghelp.com and learned to cast on and knit stitch, but not purl. I just put it down and went back to other crafting, mainly crochet. Wink

Well, I decided I really DO want to be bi-crafty, lol, so I grabbed some needles and cotton yarn tonight. I've got about half an inch or so of stockinette and I'm feeling pretty proud! Grin  The only thing is... the base of my left thumb is very very sore. My poor left hand doesn't get this kind of a workout from crochet, I guess. Oh, and purl stitch is a bitch... but I'm sticking with it. Wink  I only cast on 20 stitches so I wouldn't get discouraged. Oh and I decided to do stockinette because I read on a thread here that learning knitting and purling at the same time can be beneficial. I'd show you a pic, but I have to get a new SD chip for my camera. I'll try to get to that tomorrow. Other info I thought I'd throw out there: I'm knitting continental, on size 10 (6mm) circulars (but flat), and using peaches 'n' creme in possibly the most god-awful variegation I've ever seen. Grin

Anyway, I'm going back to it for at least another row. Do you call them rows in knitting? Cheesy

Edit: I just tried the throwing method, too! Smiley
7  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / Is there a method of increasing/decreasing in stitch pattern? on: June 10, 2008 01:07:30 PM
I'd like to make a summer tank top, preferably v-neck, and I haven't found any patterns I like. So I'd really like to design my own. I'm a fairly experienced hooker and I own several stitch pattern books, but I don't know how to decrease or increase in a stitch pattern. I'm hoping there's a simple math formula or something. Smiley

For instance, if I wanted a simple tank top done in this pattern how would I increase or decrease for the shaping? Would this one be any easier?

Thanks in advance for any help!
8  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / DIY ho's photo gallery on: April 22, 2008 09:02:36 PM
With the macro challenge on, I thought I'd post a few more of my fave pics that aren't entered. Wink  Unless I say otherwise, no retouching has been done, only cropping.

A camellia in a local garden/park, taken last spring.

I really like the lens flare I got here! Grin

And just for fun... photoshopped muffins! Cheesy

9  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Macro Photo Challenge: "Go Away!" on: April 21, 2008 04:37:44 PM
I knew I wanted to enter this challenge as soon as I heard of it. I have a great macro of a flower, but I wanted something a little different for this...

So I give you my fuzzball, Sebastian, saying, "Go away!" Smiley

You can even see the freckle on his nose! Oh, and that's his paw across his head. (My man thought it was his tail.)
10  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Crochet Stitch Markers, 5 sets = 5 pics on: April 15, 2008 04:38:35 PM
I made these for someone in the OWS 32. Since they've been received, I wanted to share them with you all.

1--My fave set out of this bunch. They look like candy!

2--Green and 'antique' silver beads. Reminded me of sushi!

3--Simple star charms.

4--Black disk beads.

5--My 2nd fave set. Pink/blue/white marbled beads.

Enjoy! Comments appreciated. Smiley
