1  COOKING / Dessert / Marzipan Scrabble Pieces on: September 14, 2008 12:03:30 PM
I made these for a friends' wedding, as decoration for their wedding pies* (as opposed to cakes...lovely idea, no?) They both love scrabble, and I suggested something small and cute to reflect that.

(ignore the small smudge- I cleaned them up before presentation...)

I rolled the marzipan to about 1/4 inch thickness, then cut out the pieces at about 170% actual size.

I then used a rubber stamp to emboss the 'E's and 'L's onto the pieces. I had originally planned to just stamp the letter on with edible ink/gel food colouring, but abandoned that idea after a few smudged disasters...

After letting them set a bit, I hand 'inked' the embossed letters, using gel colouring in black and a toothpick.

20 pies in all...they were a hit!

*I did not make the pies- they came from a local bakery- Banana cream and Chocolate cream- delicious!)
2  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Some Desktop Backgrounds... on: November 28, 2007 03:19:10 PM
Well, as the -19c degree weather hit, my lunchour walks/shops/eating out also took a hit. As unhealthy as it is, I have spent this week's lunch hours playing aroud with Photoshop and 'crafting' these fun desktop backgrounds.

This one, I took a swatch of the rug from here:http://rosylittlethings.typepad.com/posie_gets_cozy/2007/11/oh-to-be-a-litt.html (thanks Posie get Cosy!!) and pieced it together:

This is the one that started the whole thing off - I found this great vintage cotton printed shirt, but it was extremely short and I couldn't figure out how to wear it! I brought it into work, scanned the print and then decided I'd try it under a black sweater vest.

I LOVE the print, at any rate...

AND my favorites...I saw this poster posted on CRAFT magazine's blog (I think!?) and had to do something with it!! The background is from the Dover clipart sampler!

After making these, I decided that none of them were terribly appropriate for my work computer. I work as an archivist for the school district, and though something like this might be more appropriate...and cuter!

I went even further, and 'wrote' my weekly appointments, notes and meetings on the 'blackboard' with a chalk-like font.

I also adapted it to send to a friend:

I certainly had fun making them- what do you think!?
3  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Finally, my Mary Poppins Costume! on: November 03, 2007 12:24:11 PM
I've wanted to do this for quite some time now....very excited to finally have completed it!

Thanks for having a look!!
4  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Plaid Autumn Handbag - First handbag project! on: October 12, 2007 12:15:01 PM
So, I'd been meaning to try my hand at some handbag making, and amidst the Thanksgiving prepping, cooking and baking this past weekend, I was inspired!

I've had this perfect plaid remnant for years, from my grandmother's collection, but was ever so reluctant to use it...it's just too pretty! It's a poly-wool blend, with the nicest weave ever!

Throwing caution to the wind, I went to work, freehanding it based on tips I could remember from various bag/pouch tutorials

Here it is:

Obviously, it requires a bit of pressing still...but I've been carrying it around constantly since I made it so...no time!

I did some lovely corner seams...

Some fun, decorative stitching (as an experiment...)

and even covered some (decorative) buttons with the remnants of the green raw silk lining

Can't wait to make more!

I think next time I'll throw some interfacing in there, for greater stability and definition

Thanks for looking!
5  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Crewel Worked curtains into recovered seating (now with more and better photos!) on: October 11, 2007 09:36:32 PM
So yeaaaaars ago, I picked up some cream linen curtains, with blue crewel working on them. I had them up in my bedroom at home, but after 2 moves, they were relegated to a rubbermaid bin in storage....

when we moved into our current place in August,  my roomate and  - both decor-conscious ladies - figured we needed some unifying element in our living room, to avoid that whole mismatched student furniture look...

So, with her mad, mad sewing skills and mine with a staple gun and some patience, we went to work!

K recovered 2 ottomans- one of hers, one of mine - and I reupholstered an antique chair I had. I think they turned out quite well!!

Here's the chair:

6  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Art Deco Inspired/Freehand Flower Pot & Frame on: September 21, 2007 09:39:08 PM
After YEARS of wanting to learn to embroider, I finally dove right in...and could barely put it down!!

I decided to just play a bit for my first 'sample', get to know some stitches and colours and technique. I freehanded a small design, and went to work!

Before:

and After:

I was quite pleased with the end product! Though I still haven't decided what to do with it yet...maybe an ipod sleeve??

Please comment!
7  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Art Deco inspired Shrinky Dink Keychain & Wine Bottle Label!! on: September 21, 2007 09:30:14 PM
My first post, and I couldn't resist throwing these two little gems up here!

I picked up a sampler pack of Shrinky Dinks (with frosted, opaque white, opaque cream, black and brown sheets included) and decided tos experiment! Out of necessity, as I just plain have far too many keys, I decided on a key chain...

This is for my 'home' keys (and those of the boy...)

I also decided, after the unfortunate and tragic loss of a very nice bottle of Birthday wine to some well meaning visitors of my roomie, to make up some 'wine tags', in order to avoid future mix-ups...

(The 'Little Penguin' Wine, however,  doesn't hold a candle to my lovely Latour Pinot Noir...sigh...)

Alright for a first try! I'm sold on shrinky dinks!!

What do you think?
