1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / Floral Black Skirt on: July 29, 2013 03:45:16 PM
I had some fabric left over from making a blouse sometime ago and I spontaneously made a gathered skirt with waistband and pockets!!

The pocket pattern is a standard for when I need the extra space!!

in the making...

A picture of the dress in the making!!
Fits lovely without a zip being fitted. Will upload when it is 100% finished with lining(it will deffos need lining!)

Best to line with something similar - jersey knit?

Thanks for the advice!

I have started making the dress from the jersey fabric and so far so good. Will post when it is finished  Grin

I have read about walking foots before but I can't afford one at the moment - they seem really good(just pricey). I have managed to keep the jersey from puckering etc so far.

Hey!

A warning about the pattern - I bought a size 14 and made a mock up first(as I always do with older patterns). The extra fabric at thr front that drapes made me look like I was wearing a maternity dress - I think the drape on this dress would be beautiful on a pregnant woman! I have altered the pattern slightly so that there is less fabric at the front and looks better.

Here is the mock up(made from unwanted cotton bedsheet)

In terms of fabric... I am still undecided - But I have two in mind!!

I have a jersey fabric from fabricland.co.uk

I have not worked with Jersey before, so I have just been looking up advice on tips. As it stretches, i wonder if I can get away without adding the zip at the back, as I have read how tricky it is to sew zips into jersey :/ any advice there?

My other possible choice is a cotton voile from Truro Fabrics (UK) http://www.trurofabrics.com- a great shop a friend told me about. To far to visit in person but their online shop is such a delight in comparison to Fabricland.co.uk!

Both of these fabrics are transparent and require a lining! Boo!!Which ever fabric does not get used will be made into a skater dress i think!

I started dressmaking less than a year ago. I always make a mock up out of old sheets first, adjusting the sizing of old patterns that I was given.

Don't rush it either. Understand each step as you go!

And good luck!

Thank you both, I shall have a browse. My local fabric stores don't have much in terms of crepe!

I have bought a Somplicity 6672 pattern with an intention of making a summer dress that I would like to wear to a wedding in August.

THE PATTERN

I am stuck with what fabric to pick out for it. A friend has suggested Silk Crepe(with a cotton lawn lining) but this doesnt come cheap. Can any one suggest any fabric which might suit this dress. Something lightweight and drapey would work best?

Thanks x
