Over the summer, my sister and I watched both seasons of Legend of the Seeker, the TV show based on Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth books. When it came time to think of Halloween costumes (around mid-August), my sister asked me if I would make her a Sister of the Dark costume, specifically for the character Sister Nicci. I decided I would be another character from the show/series to go along with her, namely the Mother Confessor, Kahlan Amnell. It took me pretty much two months to make both of these costumes, which we wore to the Renaissance Festival in our area the day before Halloween. Before this, the only finished item I'd ever sewn was a skirt for last year's Halloween costume!
The back:
My white Confessor dress is made out of two queen-sized bedsheets. I didn't manage to finish the sleeves before we left, so the drapey parts of the sleeves are made out of the curtains I bought for my freshman dorm room safety-pinned to the dress. I drafted the pattern myself so that it would look authentic. I'm not happy with the way the bottom of the lacing puckers the fabric, though; I've got to figure out a way to fix that before I wear the costume again.
My sister's red Sister of the Dark dress is made out of costume satin. I used McCall's 2401 for the pattern, but I altered it a LOT to be floor-length and include the collar and side pleats on the skirt (they take the place of a slit so she can walk). I'm really happy with this dress, but it's all wrinkly in the pictures from the car ride to the festival. I guess that's just the problem with making things out of satin!
