all I can say is that you're not the only one in that boat!  Except I can't make things without patterns.  I agree on buying cheap fabric so you don;t worry about making mistakes.  Good luck!

  love that smilie.  Anyhow, I've been lucky enough for dh to help me figure out the drawings or I would've never been able to start knitting.  I'm a chicken though!!  So far I've only made super easy things - scarfs, blankets, a blanket bunny (that had it's challenging moments though), and a baby hat (knitted flat then sewed up the seam).   none of it is perfect by any means but usually you can't tell unless you look closely - thanks to fluffy yarn imo.

I've only stenciled one thing but.....I bought a stencil at Micheals.  I've used them to stencil things on my daughters walls but thought why not?  I'm not going to go out and buy every stencil but I figured a couple of dollars was worth the time not to cut it out myself.  It seems to have turned out well.

btw- I cheated and bought a stencil  I was too impatient to see how it would turn out, or rather if I could make it turn out ok.  I haven't heat set it yet, but plan to tonight and throw it in with a load of towels and see how it comes out.
