1  Why the 80s should not be brought back... in Vintage Craft Projects by PollyEsther on: February 14, 2006 05:57:17 AM
From Erica Wilson's 1982 "Needlework to Wear" book:

This project is called the "popcorn pullover." See how cute she looks in it? With those hunched shoulders (or are those shoulder pads) and hands jammed into her pockets? She lit out for the dressing room at a dead run the second that picture was snapped. Much as I love Erica Wilson... (shudders).

From the same book, fun with stud setters:

caption: "Make a wrapped and studded BROW BAND and abeautifully decorated SWEAT SHIRTS with the help of a stud setter."

...but what possessed her to put a LACE COLLAR on a sweatshirt? Oh, wait. It was the 80s. Nevermind.

2  Re: Movie Knits in Knitting: Discussion and Questions by PollyEsther on: August 18, 2005 07:33:16 AM
Does anybody else here watch Dead Like Me? I've been watching season 2 on DVD and, in addition to there being a scene where some guy gets stabbed with knitting needles, the dad (Greg Kean's character) is wearing this really cool sweater in one episode-- it looks ribbed at first, but then you notice the ribbing sort of wanders. I found a not-very-good picture of it:

Does anybody know how this is done, or where to get directions for it?

Wow. I had no idea such neatness was possible! This is pretty much what all my backs look like--cobwebs (so you can all feel great about your own Wink):

4  Yellow feet (aka the bad DIY cosmetics and skin care thread) in Stitch And BOTCH by PollyEsther on: September 16, 2004 09:47:02 AM
this is fair game, since there's a whole health and beauty section here...

I'm a sucker for experimenting with skin-care products, and had run across some references to coconut oil and turmeric having antibiotic/antifungal properties. Since I had both of these things in my cabinets, I had to try it out. So  I mixed up a paste of turmeric and coconut oil and slathered it on my feet and lower legs before bed one night.

Sadly, I missed the memo about turmeric also being used as a yellow dye. Despite several attempts to wash it off, my feet and fingernails remained a violent shade of yellow for days. And the stuff does not wash out of fabric. Ever. Casualties: One set of sheets, two pairs of socks, one set of pajamas, three t-shirts and one pair of jeans.

On the plus side, I haven't been bothered by athlete's foot since....
Here's my beautiful canary toes after it had a couple of days to wear off:

Not knocking on the che shirts, you understand. I'm just a pacifist weirdo. Wink I wanna see my heros out there.  Here's the Gandhi stencil I finished this morning:

6  Mermaid embroidery in Needlework: Completed Projects by PollyEsther on: August 03, 2004 11:45:28 AM
This was lots of fun, and I had to show it off...  I used the b/w illuminated manuscript picture (found online) as a pattern.

btw, I used a hoop for this, but it still puckered.  Is there a good solution for that, other than using thicker canvas (not an option, as I embroidered it onto my shirt)?
