Worked on my medium yesterday and all was going well but it didn't turn out in the end.  Am going to start over today with a different approach.

4  Craft Swaps / ACTIVE SWAPS WHERE SIGN-UP PERIOD HAS CLOSED / Re: Harry Potter Favorites Swap- SUs end TODAY!!! on: July 06, 2014 06:12:43 PM
I have been watching this thread for awhile, debating whether I was ready to sign up for another swap and I just can't resist!  What did me in was the comments about how some of you became fans after visiting the Wizarding World of Harry Potter because that is my story too!  I always like the book series but I was kind of older so I didn't get as lost in them as I would have at a younger age.  But after visiting WW, I just became "obsessed" as my daughter calls it!  And I love that I found this community of Harry Potter obsessed crafters that I can relate to!
5  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Sideshow Mermaid on: July 02, 2014 08:50:19 PM
I made this for the mini altered tin swap.  My partner had lots of circus/sideshow pins on her pinterest so I came up with the idea of making the "Fiji Mermaid":

I used the tiny altoid tin to hold the "mermaid" that I made from a little plastic christmas angel--I cut her in half, made a fish tail out of clay then painted her all brown.  I sprinkled coffee grounds on her for texture and some wool for the hair.  Some of the "mermaid" images I found had white eyes painted on--I like the creepiness of that so I gave her white eyes (hard to see in this picture):

An altered Barbie is the the creepy circus man enticing you to come inside the tent for more sideshow freaks!  I painted her eyes and new eyebrows, yellow teeth, wicked facial hair and dirtied up her cheeks.

I made the hat from card stock and clothes from felt and ribbons.  It was the most time-consuming part, making the clothes, but at least I could just glue them on.

I decided to cut her legs short since it was such a small scene with the mini-tin and I glued her to a wood base that I decorated and distressed with scrapbook paper and brown chalk.  I decided to glue a poster to the back advertising the show.  I thought it might distract from her short little legs!

I thought it was a little extravagant for a "Mini tin" swap but my other ideas were even more grand, so much that I was thinking, "I can't even tell there is a tin in there".  But I'm happy that it turned out mostly how I pictured it in my head, a lot of times things don't and I was pretty worried that it would look cheesy in the end, so I am relieved that my partner likes it!
6  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: Mini Altered Tin Swap Gallery on: July 02, 2014 08:13:46 PM
I'm so glad my tin arrived safely to you, it was very delicate with all those little parts, I thought for sure something would get smashed!  But looks like it arrived perfectly!  I'm happy that you like it.   I was afraid it was getting too extravagant while I was making it and when I saw the other tins that people made. Undecided But you like it and that's all that matters!  I did make the clothes and hat, its a lot easier to make clothes that don't have to come off because you can glue them on!
I got your tin today too and I love it so much!  It has such perfect little details and beautiful craftsmanship!  Everyone, here is my very own Harry Potter Hufflepuff shrine:
(Hi Helga!)
on the back is a hufflepuff quote:

and a side view so you can see how it is tilted just right:

Thank you so much Cackle, loved swapping with you too!

I've got 2 ideas in my head, will see which one works out best!  Both look really cool in my head but very intricate and I don't know if I can pull either one off.
