2  HOME SWEET HOME / Interior Decorating: Discussion and Questions / cleaning a very dirty house - friends just moved into on: July 17, 2010 09:14:02 PM
OK so i have friends who are engaged and my friend of 13 years is 7 1/2 months pregnant and they have finally got a place, the owners 'cleaned' the house before they moved in.... i say cleaned very lightly, and were meant to either paint the house or supply the paint so it can be painted, an they have called the realestate 3 times asking when the paint will be supplied, but the house is just filthy and being 7 1/2 months pregnant my friend cannot really do any of the cleaning so I'm willing to do it for her

here are the main problems:
  • whole house is tiled - grout is black instead of grout colour especially in laundry, toilet and bathroom
  • bathroom counter if filthy and rough, like the enamel was stripped off
  • all the window and door frames and tracks are filthy with peeling paint
  • there are no curtains just vertical blinds & they are filthy and some broken
  • the kitchen counter has sections burnt out and gouged out
  • the walls and doors and architraves are filthy

whats the best way to clean the grout on the floors? i know it will be a big job, i have access to a steam cleaner for like between tiles as well as a steam mop and other everyday cleaning items

the counter in the bathroom, how would i go about cleaning it and possibly re sealing it? or putting a coating over it?

the door frames n windows will need to be cleaned n the peeling stuff removed what is the best way to do this?

the curtains i plan on making for them as a present, but i was wondering the best way to hang curtains in a rented property? should i do the hook and eye method with the curtains on the covered wire? or put in curtain polls? i don't think i want to spend the money on polls if they only have a 6 month lease an i don't want to leave anything for the owner who is obviously a jack** when it comes to looking after his property's, and Ive seen my mother clean verticals in the bathtub but i know its a big job, but they need curtains for prettiness and privacy and warmth

is there anything that can be done to cover or fix the kitchen counters? they seem to be melamine, like just for hygiene reasons

and the walls and doors and architraves and ceilings all need a good scrub with sugar soap before they can even think of re painting

now the problem is my friend only has well 10 weeks to go and she is still working for 4 weeks so i only have weekends and then when shes on maternity leave to help out

and i know 10 weeks isn't a long time but i want to help them get this house cleaned PROPERLY AND STERILISED before the baby arrives so the have nothing to worry about because it really is in need of some love and care. so any help or suggestions would be appreciated Smiley
I'm doing this as a big favour and help to my friend and her fiancee because she really cannot do much and already tore a muscle from above the sac trying to do too much. and they still have allot to unpack and the baby's room is just filled with stuff to unpack ATM

the yards will apparently be done up by the owner hes meant to be paying someone but they still need some care and cleaning and the cleaning of the walls and painting i think i will try an organise a bunch of us to come and scrub walls and paint when they get it and clean up the yards.

so yes any advice, help and ideas.. or even just some support (its a big undertaking 3 bedroom house thankfully only one bathroom and toilet and one loungeroom) would be lovely

love boo

3  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Twilight ECLIPSE cardigan and cullen crest t on: July 09, 2010 05:53:43 AM
since my partner princessjazz has recieved her package in the longing for eclipse swap ill post pics of the clothing items i embelished

first is the eclipse ribbon cardigan, all hand stitched, yes that ribbon is hand stitched with tiny little stitches, the lace is hand stitched and so are all the lil sparkles, beads, charms and flower. i had a idea to knit an eclipse scarf with a black peice as the break in the ribbon but i couldnt find my wool and didnt get time to get to the craft store then i wanted to put the cullen crest on it but i didnt like the contrast between the patch and the black cardigan and so this idea was born, my partner loved it and im so glad she did, i was worried it might be too over the top.... enough of my prattling.. onto the piccys!

5  POTTERY, CERAMICS, POLYMER CLAY / Polymer Clay: Discussion and Questions / paper clay and deco cream questions on: July 05, 2010 10:31:15 PM
im not shure if it goes in this thread but i guess its the closest i can think of....

i recently brought some of that japanese paper clay and deco cream and deco sauce as well as some little canes some pre cut some not cut, and i have no idea how to use it so ill list my questions....

1. paper clay, how long does it take to cure and i got a mould for it an it says to leave in mould till dry, is this really necessary?

2. deco cream, how long does it take to set? im gathering its just a silicon type material ? so 12-24hrs?

3. how would i go about putting head pins into the paper clay and deco cream?

4. what is the best method of slicing the canes? they are small and semi hard, do i have to bake these after ive sliced them or do they dry out?

5. sealing, do i just seal the clay cane peices and paper clay or can i seal the deco cream too?

6. how long does the deco sauce take to dry? it seems to just be like glue?

any help would be appreciated
sorry this took so long
thanks

Details of swap:
TTTFBS - Two tiny things favorite bands swap
The main idea of this swap is to open ur mind to a different band, genre, artist or type of music that you are normally used to listening to and to craft your partner two tiny items based on the band. It can be to do with song lyrics, album art, fave person in the band and such, if you have any questions just pm me.

The idea if this swap is to make two tiny craft item with the theme of one or two of the swap partners favorite bands. It should be physically small and should be something that you can craft with a high level of skill. Even if it is a fairly simple/easy item for you to make, please embellish so that it best represents your skill. (For example, if you wish to make a coin purse, you could embroider, add beading, or take other steps to make it a really special piece.)

-You will receive only one partner.
-You may only send that partner TWO tiny fave band swap items- "extras" are  allowed but only if they are not crafted and are tiny.
-NO BURNT CDS OR ITEMS OF THIS MANNER ARE ALLOWED DUE TO COPYRIGHTS.
-All items must be 10X10 or smaller.

How do you know if your idea is "tiny?" Examples: A coin purse is tiny or pencil case thats 10x5 inches is tiny. A pair of earrings/pendant is tiny. A trinket box is tiny; a small photo decorated photo frame or handmade band patch, a small jewellery set. If you arnt shure if an idea of urs is small enuf just PM me.

For a wonderful swap experience, communication and no flaking is the key!
Please be shure to keep in touch with your partner and to check in with the organizer once in a while. It would also be nice for you to post in the thread once a week just for a quick hello or an update on where you are at with the crafting like if you have ur ideas and such. (even a quick hello.....or if on holiday or will be without internet access or anything of the such, message would be wonderful....it gives your partner and organizer piece of mind to know you are still around and participating).

If you want to participate, information to send to organizer:
