Hi. This is my first real try at mosaic. I've already learned a few things:
1. I hate ceramic tile. It is gritty and I can't stand touching or nipping it.
2. Just because I can draw and color a realistic waterlily doesn't mean that I can transfer it to a 16" square and use 1 color of tile and make it look just as good as my cute little drawing.
3. Ask for help.
4. Fiberglass raw edges will EAT YOUR SKIN UP!
5. Don't make crafts for people you are bitter with. You then do not care if your mosaic looks crappy.
This is the story:
My son broke 2 of my mom's outside cheap side tables. The kind with prefab slab of mosaic tile in the top. Yep, two. I guess he thought they were ugly too.
My mom wanted something more interesting.
My Dad doubted that I could measure a base correctly so he cut me some bases out of fiberglass s/crap he had at work. Neglecting to tape off the raw edges my arms now look like hamburger due to rubbing it. Don't worry, I taped them.
Thanks for the help Dad; I never did learn how to use a tape measure.
So, I now need to make two replacement tops. I'm enjoying the learning process, but I need lots of feedback along the way.Pictures are now out of order-sorry.
Well, I'm hoping a new picture will show up so I'm listing this out of order now. But here is where I am, I've glued down all pieces and I will grout in gray. I'm choosing that color b/c I feel it is the most neutral and I already have some
I like the fish the best. I wish I would have just done two of those, but we'll see how the flower turns out...I can always make another fish. I liked the tile I used better on the fish, not shiny. Plus he's a simple shape and I think that worked better.
I've been working slowly, but here is some more. The blue isn't glued down, but that will be the color. Also, the spaces in the middle will be filled with yellow beads to look like stamen? I think that is what they are called. And HSG- the mosaic will fit down in a table frame. I plan on leaving a little space around the edge and grouting and beveling the edge just a little.
Here is my first WIP picture. ALL feedback is welcome.
