1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Altered McCalls M5806 for Rehearsal Dinner on: December 17, 2009 07:51:34 PM
Hey all! This is my 2nd biggest project ever! My first was this same dress for my friend's wedding (still unfinished).

This is going to be my other friend's rehearsal dinner dress. BUT, question - first, what is this "technique" called? pleated? not sure. secondly, how do I go about achieving this type of bodice from the pattern for McCalls M5806??

Here's what the bodice and midriff should look like (directly from Jim Helm):

And this is the original McCalls M5806 sketch:

I'm totally lost on how to -
1. expand the pattern piece to accommodate this "pleated-ness"
2. pleat the bodice in a similar fashion (it looks like it slants upwards on the side seams...right? not sure)

unfortunately that's the best pic of the Jim Helm dress I could find! Sad

please help! any suggestions or advice is much appreciated! Smiley

Swap name: OTT Halloween Edition
Craftster member who is organizing this swap: PerlaBella
Sign-up date range: Oct 1st - Oct 7th
Date to send item by: Oct 31st

Limited to a certain number of people? (optional): No limit

Restricted to people who all live in the same country?: No
If so, which country?: N/A

Age requirement?: 16+ (per the new swap guidelines)

Swap Organizer himself/herself meets these conditions:
- Has fully read the Swap Info Guide: YES
- Has successfully completed two swaps as a participant: YES
- Is not organizing more than three swaps right now: YES
- Will recruit a co-organizer or give all details to a Swap Moderator if this swap has more than 25 participants: YES
- Is at least 18 years old: YES

Swap Organizer will check each participant to make sure they meet these conditions:
- Has been a member for at least one month: YES
- Has posted at least 15 times: YES
- Has completed one swap successfully before signing up for multiple swaps at a time: YES
- Is not currently signed up for more than five swaps: YES
- Does not have any negative feedback: YES
- Participant has agreed that he/she is at least 16 years old: YES
- If yes, understands that Delivery Confirmation number is required for this swap: YES
- If no, understands that a mailing receipt copy is required for this swap: YES

Details of swap:
One Tiny Thing swaps are based on the idea that you'll be crafting, literally, one tiny item. Tiny refers to the actual size of the item but even though it's small, it should be an item that is crafted with a high level of skill. If it's a simple/easy item for you to craft, try to embellish or perfect it to best represent your skills. (For example, a needlebook can have beading or embroidery on it to really jazz it up.)

Like previous rounds, this OTT is going to be a themed one. To celebrate October, the OVERALL theme of this swap will be the celebrations in October!! So your 5 themes should be related to the October celebrations: Halloween, Day of the Dead, Samhain, Oktoberfest and all other celebrations

[I had to call it something specific such as Halloween so I apologize to celebrators of other festivals - I don't mean to offend by any means]

Also an FYI - the NEXT OTT round will go back to "normal" with just the 5 random themes. This is just to celebrate October! Smiley So if you're not a fan of any of those celebrations, don't worry!

Anyways, this means: list 5 themes for your partner to choose from to craft your item. In other words, if you choose the color blue as a theme in your list, your partner could make something based on that theme, ie: blue stitch markers. Your themes can be anything; you just need 5.

After you have been approved, you are welcome to post your 5 themes in the thread. That being said, if you spy (with your little eye) that you rather fancy someone's theme list and would like to craft for them, please feel free to PM PerlaBella/me and let me know that you would like to be partnered up with that participant. I cannot guarantee that you will indeed get that person BUT I will absolutely take it into consideration during the pairing up.

Other Details of the swap:
1. You will have one partner.
2. This is a NO-EXTRAs swap. You can only send the item you craft and NOTHING else. If you do send Extras, that will be noted in your feedback. The whole point of this swap is to be low-stress and simple so it's not fair if some abide by this rule but others don't.
3. You can only send your partner ONE tiny thing. (See below for examples of a tiny thing.) All items must be within 4"x4" dimensions or smaller.

Is your item tiny?:
Pair of earrings - tiny; necklace, earrings and bracelet set - NOT tiny
ATC - tiny; full-size drawing - NOT tiny
Change purse - tiny; clutch purse - NOT tiny
Bottom line: 4"x4" dimensions; if the item "naturally" comes in a pair or a set (ie: earrings, stitch markers), that is okay. If you aren't sure if your idea can be considered "tiny", please ask!

Rules of the swap:
- Please use the following subject when sending PMs: OTT Halloween - with one of the following:
Approval
Sent
Received
Question

- You must: a. post in the thread (original or gallery) at least once a week OR b. PM me and your partner once a week. Real life is more important than online life - if you need an extension for sending, please let me and your partners know. This is really important to avoid the "flaker" and negative feedback possibility.

- One week before the Oct 31st  send-out date, you will receive a PM to check that everything is okay. If you think you may be sending late, you MUST PM me and your partner.

- This is a NO-EXTRAs swap. You can only send the item you craft, and NOTHING else. If you do send Extras, that will be noted in your feedback.

- You MUST post a picture of your received item in the gallery...because we're all curious little ones  Smiley If you don't have access to a camera or scanner, please make arrangements with your partner.

Details of swap:

Oooh earrings! Everyone loves them and should have countless pairs of them! So that's why we're here!

In this swap, you will be crafting earrings for your partners. You can choose the number of partners you want:

Swap newbies - max of 2 partners
Seasoned swap-sters - max of 4 partners
FOCs - max of 6 partners

So be creative and craft to your heart's content! Stalking your partners is highly recommended! So please provide links to any Wists or blogs or anything to help your partners out.

Shipping for this Swap:
This swap is open to international participants so please specify your shipping preference in your questionnaire. As always, make sure to save your receipt if shipping internationally.

For those shipping within the US, this swap REQUIRES a DC #. If you cannot or will not get a DC#, do not sign up for this swap. If you don't get DC#s, it will be noted in your feedback. I apologize if this seems a bit harsh but this will ensure a great swap experience for all participants.

Please don't ship your earrings in regular envelopes without padding. Padded manila envelopes are best but please make sure to wrap them in a bit of extra stuffing. If you do and your partner can provide pictures of the broken item, you will have to send a replacement pair.

Communication:
Since this swap includes multiple partners, communication is CRUCIAL! Please post in the thread at least once a week or PM me and your partners once a week.

Real life is more important than online life - if you need an extension for sending, please let me and your partners know. This is really important to avoid the "flaker" and negative feedback possibility.

Please be sure to PM quickly once you've sent and once you've received. And please post pics in our gallery! Everyone will want to see the goodies you've received! If you can't post pictures, please make arrangements with your partners. I want to make sure everyone receives feedback quickly so make sure to PM and post pictures quickly.

8  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / HELP! - Electra Floral (Nicky Epstein Knitted Flowers) on: March 26, 2009 03:53:28 AM
Hi all! I'm working on the Electra Floral from Nicky Epstein's Knitted Flowers book and I'm completely lost. It's a constructed flower, meaning each petal is supposed to be knit up separately. Here's the part of the pattern I'm completely lost with:

Row 16: purl. Leave 5 sts on needle.
With free needle, rep rows 1-16 five more times, ending with row 15 on last rep - 30 sts.

Okay, when you start the first petal, you're starting with the outer edge and you end with the edge of the petal that is connected to the CENTER of the flower.

When I first tried to interpret her instructions, I left the 5 sts from Petal 1 on the needle and continued with Petal 2. HOWEVER, that made the center edge of Petal 1 connected to the outer edge of Petal 2.....I looked at it COMPLETELY confused!  Huh  Shocked

Has anyone else completed this pattern yet? It doesn't say anywhere to CUT the yarn after leaving the sts on the needle so I'm completely lost...PLEASE HELP!!! THANK YOU!!!!  Grin

10  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Any interest in One for Me, One for You swap? on: March 01, 2009 10:21:46 AM
Hi all, I saw this swap that I missed out on: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=254457.0 and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in another round of it...? I know I've got a TON of bookmarks that I'd like to try out Smiley

I'm interested in organizing it so I wanted to get a feel for how many people would be game...I'm a fan of medium-sized swaps or medium+small combo type swaps. For this swap, I'm thinking probably 1 medium + 2 smalls? If that's the case, the crafting time probably doesn't have to be as long as the original one (~2 months or so). It can probably be closer to 1.5 months or maybe even just 5 weeks.

If there's an interest, I can organize the swap this month and if we start it now, the send outs could possibly be some time towards the middle/end of April. What does everyone think? Smiley
