AH! I love scrimshaw! have you done any before? it's so much fun!!! please post some if you do.
I love that you used a traditional technique and subject matter on a skateboard!
Love it :3

nope, i've never done it before. it was just a completely random idea i had for the board. i simply transferred my skills as a relief printer onto this project. i did look at a TON of scrimshaw though before i started.

I was asked to participate in an auction to benefit my Alma Mater, The University of Akron. All of us alumni were asked to create artworks on blank skateboard. Some of you may have seen my entry from last year. But this year....I did something a little more unconventional, for me, at least.

Inspired by my favorite marine mammal (after the beluga, but the poor little beluga isn't as stunning an image), the narwhal, and that lovely sailor art, scrimshaw. And from that was born my hand-carved narwhal skateboard!

In the beginning

Yeah...that's what it looked like midway through. What a mess. But you can see the original color of dayglo orange

tacky... glamorous... what's really the difference?
6  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / My post-high school prom on: May 05, 2010 04:51:43 PM
So, I'm a high school art teacher and I've temporarily lost my mind. I am chaperoning prom. See? Mind lost. Anyways, I decided the best way to ignore the awful music and teenagers dirty dancing is to make it the prom I never had. Never had as in I didn't know I was crafty in high school. This is my chance to have a crafty, unique prom. I made a headband. Everyone was horrified by my materials list: pearls, felt, ribbon, rhinestones (200+) and silver beads. But without further ado, I give you the amazingly tacky, not tacky headband for prom!

Pearls and rhinestones on the felt.

Beading....

On my head...

7  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Re: A little encouragement for a terrible roller derby skater on: April 21, 2010 07:46:29 PM
thanks so much for the reply. i took a lesson last week which didn't go to well. i fell twice marching around and i think my instructor hated me. i haven't giving up yet but finding time to skate is hard at the moment. i'm a teacher so the year will end soon and i'll have plenty of time for nothing but learning Smiley

haha! thanks for the advice. they're on clips so they are going to be moved up. but they looked better lower for the pictures. i'm in the process of getting some skating lessons, dragging friends to rinks in the near future and hopefully becoming decent.

i'm in agreement. the one on the right just has this sweet sadness. maybe that doesn't sound appealing but it is!
10  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / A little encouragement for a terrible roller derby skater[pom poms] on: April 11, 2010 02:14:02 PM
I am an aspiring roller girl. However, I cannot skate. I had a lovely bruise last week to prove it. I'm working on it though. So, I've decided to take on some crafts to give myself a little confidence. I mean, if you make a craft you have to show it off, right? And if it's on my skates, I have to skate to show it off. Anyways...here we go. Skating advice and encouragement also welcome.

Pom poms...just like old school roller disco!

And for my entertainment, crazy or crazy awesome as a hair accessory?
