Hello Fellow Gardeners! I had a nice, welcome surprise when I got home yesterday - my package from Crazyda79 - but it was too late for me to take pix and upload.
Now I have pix, and will need to set up a gallery. Details to follow.
In the meantime, here is an action shot of one of my legion of garden destroyers who are very lucky that they are very cute.

4  Re: Ongoing Dotee Craftalong-2010 in Craftalongs by AlternaWidget on: May 03, 2010 11:38:10 AM
Hi! I'll just post this one old one (and replace it with a better shot later), and then on to my new work. This one shows eyebrows stitched on the surface with white floss.
Yes, I do embroider the surface of all my sculpted faces, regardless of the flesh tone.  To achieve a certain shade of skin, build up 2, 3, or more layers of nylon as needed to overcome the whiteness of the fibrefill.
I also use watercolors for additional color because they sit on the surface until I "pop" them in with a cotton swab.

Someone once described this process as making a "cara de pasa", or "raisin face". Smiley

Oh my GOSH!! I just received from DestinedtoFail, and it is AMAZING!!

Pinks, purples, amazing beads (including a tiny saw blade, hearts, crystals, key, and more!), dowel rod legs and arms, a tiny pink bird nestled inside, and THE EYE... The eye is GORGEOUS! A giant blue eye (how did you know that?) fabulously shaded, and laminated.

Beautifully crafted, totally original. You guys are awesome!
THANK YOU!!!

ps: You must be psychic, too. I was making evil eyes to place in my windows for the benefit of the guys working next store, and along comes this beautiful (and not at all evil) big eye! Smiley

Thanks for your nice comments! She has gotten some additional attention, and probably will get a bit more as the morning goes on, and she is definitely developing some character.

I upped the colors a bit more than usual so you can see them (and of course the picture is terrible). Her eye shadow and cheeks are watercolor, and her lips and eyelids are six-strand embroidery floss stitiches. She also got a bit more sculpting with a single strand of flesh-color floss to add crow's feet and to compress the fibrefill a bit. She's getting there!

Wow! So happy the photos are working again! Love the silver girl and sunny face!! They are just adorable!

I'm working on some other things, but have been wanting to make a sculpted doll face for a dotee. Here is my work in progress, in 2 or so easy steps. Smiley
Take a golf-ball sized piece of fibrefill. Cover with a layer of cheap pantyhose nylon, gather it up in back. Check for size and shape (a little too big right now is good). Cover with another layer of nylon, also gather in back. Tie off with 12" of embroidery floss, leaving 2 nice tails.
Thread up a longer craft needle with 2 strands of embroidery floss in flesh tone. Going from back to front and tying off your sculpting thread on the tails periodically, poke through to the front and form a basic face. This one took 11 stitches. Just play around. Tie your thread to the tails when you complete a part and are happy with it.

This isn't very thorough, but more of an introduction to the possibilities of needle sculpting for doll faces.
If you have any questions, please post away!

You guys blow my socks off! So original!! Then I come along and post humble embroidered thingies. You have definitely inspired me to push it harder next time. Smiley

Here is what I sent to Minowis:

And a side view of my little boxy butt kitty:

I ended up keeping the "Majora's Mask" one for further studies, but I really enjoying making and sending this little hunter.

Hi! Here's a better picture of "Crafty Girl", made by Smmarrt:

I tried to get her flying around in the flowering crabapple, but she was flying a little tooo much in the light breeze.

Isn't she sweet?

Now i need a proper display area...  Smiley

Without further ado, detail shots of the Garden Dotee made by Alwaysinmyroom!

There is soooo much detail here that some better shots were required:

Here's a long shot, showing her in her pot, which is decorated all over with gold flowers, dots, and flourishes, and tiny black swirls and dots. She has straight leaves and spanish moss filling in the top, and several knotted wool tails in pale orange.

Here is her lovely face which is 2 layers of felt, each blanket stitched in place, highlighted with pale green beads, and embroidered for details. She has a pale purple necklace with a tiny dragonfly charm. Her body's fabric is a garden print of leaves, branches, and birds, and her head is a pale green fabric. The back is signed and dated.

Here is a detail shot of her hat and hanger:

Her flower headdress is a pale purple flower all stitched down, with a few petals stitched lower and highlighted with pale purple beads (looks like dew). The hanger is braided ribbons in 2 shades of green.

SO much detail, and so beautifully done! Very sexy, indeed! THANK YOU, Alwaysinmyroom!
