This thread just reminded me of a project I did awhile back... I posted it on the pet craft page, but I'm going to repost it here, as its relevant.

Here is a picture of a home I constructed for my ratties a few years back. It was made from a bookcase I bought and assembled. Took about a weekend to complete, and they absolutely loved it. Unfortunately I was unable to completely seal the wood and rat pee soaked in, making the whole thing VERY difficult to clean well.
That said, its very crafty, so I thought I would post.


1. PVC pipe- found at your local hardware store.
2. Climbing Rope- available at pet stores, check the dog aisle
3. Ferret Hammock- not just for ferrets!
4. Bailey Rat- not available anywhere, he's mine!
5. Ladder Ramp- constructed from thin Aspen wood planks, with smaller Aspen sticks glued on for traction and grip.
6. Peices of a broken cinderblock- for natural nail filing andfcool sleeping spots during the summer.
7. Litter Box
8. Food & Water
9. Hanging Wall- complete with rat doorways
10. Nate Rat- Also not available in stores
11. Carpet Covered Table- constructed from scrap wood, great for climbing & hiding
12. Tunnel Ramp- available at your local hardware store
13. Basket of Washcloths- for digging & hiding & sleeping & burying & ....
14. Scratching Post- also constructed from scrap wood & carpet
