4  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Once More with Feeling emoticon hat! on: October 08, 2009 11:09:41 AM
I just finished what may be my favorite hat of all time. I'd had the idea to put emoticons on a hat for a while--I actually knit the whole damn thing about 6 months ago but it was an epic fail.

Well, I was housesitting last week so I had a ton of time on my hands. Voila--not one, but TWO versions of my emoticon hat, which I am calling "Once More with Feeling" .

I knit it with NaturallyCaron Country which I got at Michaels. I picked up 3 balls and had a lot of yarn leftover after making a red version and a white version of the hat.

It was a fast knit even though it has a gauge of 6 st/inch. Since the emoticon chart was only 11 rows, and right in the middle of the hat, it made it fly by. I had so much fun seeing all the little faces forming that by the time I got to the crown decreases I wasn't bored at  all.

It was an INCREDIBLY fun knit, and I'm getting so many compliments on it!  A few family friends requested their own so now I"m already working on hats 3 and 4.

6  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / handspun recycled yarn--a whole new take on upcycling sweaters on: July 17, 2009 09:21:25 AM
Hey everyone! This is my first post over here on the fiber arts board. I usually stick to the knitting boards for some reason Smiley

Anyways, I've recently gotten really into reclaiming / upcycling sweaters. Nearly all of my stash is from recycled sweaters, and I love it. It's addictive. I got in the habit of replying everything, especially if it was a thinner (think: laceweight) yarn, thus getting lovely worsted weight yarn for cheap.

One day I decided I'd try plying two different yarns from different sweaters together, and it was such a revelation. Since then, half the fun is figuring out color combos, etc, and seeing what amazing results I can get from ugly thrift store sweaters!

Here's a collage of my most recent ones:

The two are both 100% wool; the bottom left is a linen / wool combo, middle is wool; bottom right is linen / silk! I love them!

and some ones from months ago: (these are still some of my favs)

These were both silk / wool combos, and were just lovely.

Thanks for looking!
