Made a batch with maple syrup, and margerine.  Added an 8 oz  bag of tropical trail mix from the dollar store, and it is very good.

Try the washing method you want to use on the finished shirt on small samples of the trim.  Lay the samples to dry on an old tee or other white cloth to see if they fade/bleed color while drying.  If the samples survive this, wash the entire trim before sewing.

Experiment with an old pair of hose. stuff the toe with newspaper or plastic bags, and paint a band of nail polish completely around the foot a little above where you want the toes to show.  Let dry completely.  Unstuff and cut the toes off just inside the edge of the band of nail polish.  I have done this, and it survived 3 wearings before it ran.  Hope this helps.

Polar fleece can be used to make skirts, vests, and jackets. No ironing, and no fraying.  And it comes in a multitude of colors and prints.

If you look under Completed Projects-General, you will find a tutorial for making Baby bear and Kitty hats dated Nov.23rd.  Maybe you could use the kitty hat tute.  It has ear flaps.

Could you try hand basting with a single thread along the seams that you want to tear away?  Get a couple of shirts from a thrift store and experiment.
