months later and not exactly the answer you're looking for but sort of related...i have been thinking about experimenting with alternative stuffing (inspired by 2 toddlers who eat their toys, almost no money, and a genuine concern for the environment). i heard that old pantyhose are a good alternative. i thought it may have a clumpy effect but maybe if they were cut up a little... i don't know. the only problem with this is i'm not a big hose wearer so it may take 20 years for me to come up with enough "old" hose to stuff one softie. it may be something to put on my thrift shopping list. i read that you should cut the thick waste band off first. anyway, i'll let you know how it works if i ever make it happen.
other alternatives are scrap fabric, yarn pieces, etc...or as a weighted (unwashable) filler: sand, rice, beans.
