I had my lip pierced for about 4 month when i took it out for an hour it was gone.  When you first get it pierced there is no way that you will be able to take it out for a few weeks at least to change it, even for a retainer.  I just got it redone and and definitly going to wait a long time before trying to switch the ring to anything else.
