3  FIBER ARTS / Weaving: Completed Projects / 2 Handspun Woven Shawls- my first 2 weaving projects! (lots of photos!) on: October 11, 2009 04:01:19 PM
I'm super excited to share my first projects!! I just LOVE my new loom! I think weaving shows off art yarn fantasticaly!

This first shawl I'm using some beautiful yarn I fspun!  It's tailspun kid mohair, rambo locks, xl merino locks, cotswold locks, fabric, bling, bamboo, sari silk, banana silk, and novelty yarn snippets. I started weaving before I even took good yarn shots!!

I used a bamboo/silk blend for the warp..

I am SOO excited!! I am LOVING the project!!  It's just over 12" wide, 5' long (before fringe) shawl.

I just finished my second shawl and it's my most favorite thing EVER!!  For the weft, I corespun the yarn from a fun mix of textured batts with a soft base of baby alpaca and cashmere. I added some strips of a colorful silk scarf, brightly dyed banana silk, and strands of rainbow sequins.  I autowrapped the yarn in a silver holosparkle thread-
Yarn:

I used an organic cotton yarn in chocolate for the warp.

I wove it on my Ashford Knitters Loom.  It's 18 inches wide and just over 6ft w/o fringe and just about 8ft with fringe. I LOVE LOVE how it turned out! I have 2 skeins left, so I'm going to make a scarf.  Rewarping the loom today for another shawl this size! I just LOVE weaving!!

On Loom Texture-

Finished project!

Happy Friday everyone!! I did some fun spinning this week!

My favorite this week is a combo of textures.. I used a batt with bamboo, silk and alpaca, and also some loose teeswater locks. I corespun it all (tailspun the locks) with spots of lurex autowrapping.  I also added silk fabric, sequins strands, lurex, angelina, banana silk and firestar
Ice Castle, 80 yards (over 6 oz!!)

I did an extreme tailspun yarn.. it's 13 yards from 3 oz! The most beautiful cotswold curls!
Tropical Fish

here's a rainbow corespun of all sorts of fibers and textures
Clown Pants, 64 yards

I also did a couple yum soft spun singles
It was a Dark and Stormy Night, 96 yards, sw bfl

Truffle Swirl, 142 yards, sw merino/seacell

Happy weekend everyone! hope it's fiber filled!
7  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Re: bamboo fiber on: August 18, 2009 03:32:47 PM
if it has enough twist you do NOT need to ply bamboo!! I love how drapy and beautiful bamboo singles knit and crochet (and weave) up!!

plying with thread could make the yarn fall apart, as bamboo needs a bit of twist to stay together.  I would recommend just keeping your singles, if that's really how you want them! Smiley

Hey everyone! Happy friday!! I haven't posted in a few weeks.. I went to Camp PluckyFluff in chicago, then came home and got sick for 2 weeks.. ugh!!  so here's some of what I've been working on

SUPER bulky 20 yards (almost 5 oz!!)

Shooting Stars, corespun batts (my precious metal batts, black merino and TONS of gold and silver bling) with silver and gold star garland and 8 dangly sparkly stars

Candy Shoppe, my box of crayons batt (merino and silver angelina) spun with rainbow firestar cocoons, then plied with black rayon thread- making the cocoons, halos..

LemonGrass, slightly thick and thin (from dk to spt weight) merino/silk/bamboo, soft spun singles

Vegas Sunset- corespun with ric rac, gold silk fabric, pink chiffon, 3 kinds of gold sequins

Mermaid's Garden, corespun batts with silk flowers, buttons and lurex yarn autowrapping in spots

POSE, corespun over 28 gauge wire... so it's totally bendable!!

Tutti Fruiti- kid mohair corespun translucent with neps and angelina over a novelty yarn. this yarn floats like a cloud

I hope everyone has a GREAT weekend! Hubby and I are off to see Phish for our first wedding anniversary with a couple from our wedding party! xoxo

I'm SHOCKED it's 5pm here in NC, and there's NO Fiber Friday thread for me to drool over?!?

I've still been spinning for the Tour De Fleece.. so I have a few to share..

A corespun loop batt with spots of lurex autowrapping and large beads attached to the lurex..
Sangria

SeaGlass, one of my own batts, spun thick and thin and plied with silver thread and frosted "seaglass" beads

Waterlillies, corespun batt with lurex autowrapping

Diamonds in the Rough, batts spun thick and thin, plied with silver thread and 12 swvorwski crystals

I hope everyone has a great Friday and a fiber filled weekend!!
10  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Re: STEEL wool? on: July 12, 2009 06:37:40 AM
I know lexi uses some in Intertwined..

I would probably card it into a batt for texture. I think spinning it straight would make my teeth hurt
