1  Shower curtain hook decorations in Polymer Clay: Completed Projects by Psygresse on: August 15, 2007 06:29:27 PM
This project was delayed by several weeks due to a torn ligament in my thumb, but it's finally done and installed.

I'm moving in with my best friend and for the longest time, she has had her heart set on having Tweety Bird shower curtains. I didn't really like the idea, but it meant a lot to her, so I agreed on one condition: that I choose the shower curtain hooks.

The result:

In case the pictures aren't clear, those are cat paws with claws extended. They're grey instead of white because my cat is grey and loves to bat at the curtains while I shower.

I'm not too happy with how they turned out, but I suppose it's not too bad given that it's my first experience working with polymer clay. At any rate, I don't think people will be too critical of the appearance of shower curtain hooks. I think in future I would glue the decorations on instead of baking them onto the hooks. I found it hard to get the paws shaped right while keeping them well-secured. After all the trouble with my thumb, though, I'm just glad to have finally completed it.

2  IB, therefore... (Lab goggles tiara) in CHALLENGE 19 ENTRIES by Psygresse on: July 05, 2007 05:07:07 PM
I had so many issues with this challenge. I had originally planned on making a tiara out of toothbrushes, but after trying a couple of different adhesives, I couldn't find anything to hold them together except for duct tape, and I couldn't find a good way of covering it up.

Plan B turned out to be a pair of lab goggles from my CEGEP years, when I went through the IB diploma program. So I decided to put them to use for the challenge. I was hardly the queen of IB - I think one would need better grades for that - but I can pretend all I want. Tongue The IB logo is glued to the marble in the centre, and the six pictures on the lenses each correspond to one of the subjects I took as part of the program.

On the right side, there's a bust of Plato (philosophy) and a normal curve (math). The duck is there in reference to physics; in our modern physics course, our professor made constant reference to Fuzzy, the quantum mechanical duck.

On the left side, there's a picture of Guy de Maupassant (French) and Oleanna is one of the plays we read in English class. Finally, there had to be a caffeine molecule, not only because of chemistry, but because I never would have survived IB without it.

I know this in no way compares to any of the other entries, but after all the failed attempts involved, there was no way I was not posting this.  Tongue It was a lot of fun, though. I just wish I'd thought of it earlier so I could have made it more tiara-like and learned how to take better pictures of it.
