21  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Discussion and Questions / Re: cute handbags made out of wrappers! <3 on: September 16, 2007 05:30:10 PM
Purse surgery, indeed!  I was so afraid I wouldn't be able to remember what I discovered and wouldn't be able to put it back together that I took a photo every time I pulled something apart.  In the end it wasn't so mysterious.  My purse is made like the tutorial previously mentioned.  The reinforcing paper seems to be whatever was available...some is copy paper weight but some is thin and the thin paper is double thickness.  Like you said, certainly not just one way to make these things.  The zipper on mine is secured very neatly...like the tutorial, as well.  Mine is just a little clutch, with a wrist loop on the zipper pull, so I don't have any handle insights.  I did get the purse re-assembled, so I guess the surgery was a success.

Put the sheets between paper towels and iron them (no steam).

The additional piece of paper does make the purse more sturdy but can also add a lot of bulk.  My purchased (so I could figure out how it was made) purse has the reinforcing paper inside each wrapper piece, but the extra paper is only half as wide as the outside paper piece.  The reinforcing paper is centered in the middle of the wrapper paper so the piece is two layers thick only in the middle.  The outer fourths of the width are single layer.  That adds only two extra layers of paper to the final folded unit, instead of four.

No flannel backing, but Hancock Fabric's website has clear vinyl with frogs or ladybugs or flipflops that might work.  I'd be tempted to go into Joann's to check...you never know what you might find there.

This doesn't have any pictures but the directions are so simple you don't need them.  And no more equipment to buy:

27  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Re: TARGET HAS $1 YARN (not just kits!) on: September 01, 2007 10:57:23 AM
I've never had $1 luck at Target but I've bought bags full of lovely expensive yarn for $1 at various dollar stores and at BigLots.  Just today I got a flyer from BigLots advertising $1 yarn.

If a web site would help, here's one where you can buy individual colors...

I wrap around a wooden toothpick (and slide the bead off) when I want the beads to have a hole smaller than a straw.
