11  NEWS AND DISCUSSION ABOUT CRAFTSTER / Craftster Itself / whats the concept of a craftalong? on: November 17, 2007 11:07:29 PM
Is it just... this month we're making scarves and next month we're making necklaces? Does there have to be an actual physical theme? or can there be one for making xmas presents and we just support each other? Better yet, is there already some sort of post where people are making their xmas presents with the support of each other? I've searched for this and almost made a craftalong for it, but I decided I'd ask here first

Thanks!
12  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / fake cookies- how? on: October 11, 2007 02:44:44 PM
I want to make fake cookies to put in my cookie jars, so we don't keep eating cookies but I still get the look of cookies in the cookie jars!

I was thinking of maybe making clay cookies, but I thought that might use a lot of clay, and I'm not too talented with polymer clay yet.

Or I could make real cookies, and somehow seal them? I think this would look the best... but I don't want them to rot.

Any ideas?
13  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Discussion and Questions / painting burner covers on: October 11, 2007 02:36:22 PM
I got some blank burner covers at the dollar store the other day so that I can paint them. What's the best way to do this? I tried using acrylic paint, but that didn't look so good, and I'm thinking of trying spray paint, but I was wondering if anyone has done this before. I'm hoping to put some sort of pinup girl on after I paint the base coat... but I'm not sure the best way to do that either. I'm not much of an artist... but I'm good on the computer with graphics and such. any ideas? Maybe a sticker... will that work okay?
heres a picture of the burner covers blank from the store
14  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Rum bottle dish soap dispenser on: October 11, 2007 02:29:06 PM
We're big fans of Sailor Jerry Rum around here... and I saw some post about someone putting a pour spout on a vodka bottle and using it as a soap dispenser, so I had to do it! Not very crafty, but I think it's cool.

I like apple soap the best, but I think I'm going to change to the amber colored one so I can get the look of the rum better.

Maybe one of my drunk friends will try to drink it! lol
15  HOME SWEET HOME / Interior Decorating: Completed Projects / checkerboard tile counter on: October 11, 2007 02:25:42 PM
Aka... my dining room/kitchen. My boyfriend does vinyl stickers at work (the type for your car windows) and so I took some black and covered half of the white tiles on my countertop. I already had the checkerboard barstools, I got those from biglots for $20 each!

And those are my empty cookie jars... I love the look of them with cookies in them, but the cookies don't seem to last long around here

A close up of the stickers

They're not amazing, a lot of the stickers are uneven or too small, but you can't really tell unless you're looking very closely, but I like it.
What do you guys think?
16  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Discussion and Questions / melt record past center paper? on: October 11, 2007 12:01:25 PM
So I want to make a tall cup out of a melted record... and to do that I need to melt and bend it beyond the center bit... I tried today to peel off the paper, and when that didn't work I soaked it in water and rubbed off the paper. I melted it, and it still wouldn't bend past the center part. I ended up snapping the record, and so I can see that it is vinyl inside...

anyone have any ideas how to do this? or have you seen it done? links or comments are appreciated...
thanks
17  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / bday present for 12 y/o niece who wants designer (tonight!) on: September 14, 2007 04:18:28 PM
My boyfriends niece's bday dinner is tonight... and I was just told this. I need something to make (nearly no money available!) but she's a little brat- she only likes "designer". I'm hoping she won't say she doesn't like something to my face, but if she does I don't really care that much, she can get over herself.

My boyfriends mom got her a ball ice cream maker so my bf suggested that I just print her up a gift cert. for ice cream supplies... but I want something more involved than this. Any ideas?

Shes 12, her room is beach themed... she got a nintendo DS for x-mas.

maybe a DS cover or something? I think she might have got one of those already too, and I don't know how big it is... I tried doing poly clay jewelrey but I get discouraged with my lack of artist skills. I can do beads though... should I make her a necklace with different interchangeable beads?

so I guess I'm already giving myself ideas but I still need help!
18  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions / is this a good sewing machine for a beginner? on: August 05, 2007 06:09:08 PM
So my grandma is getting me a sewing machine for my birthday, and she saw a Brothers 70 Stitch Computerized for $145 at costco. I don't know anything about sewing machines really, all I know is that I want one that's fairly easy to use. What do you guys think about this machine? Any problems with it? I'd really appreciate any advice.
19  HOME SWEET HOME / Pet-Related Crafts: Completed Projects / Kitten Harry Potter cloak! on: July 20, 2007 04:14:05 AM
So we're going to the HP7 book release tomorrow, and since my kitten is only 4 weeks old (abandoned) we're taking him with us.

I can't have my kitten out of costume! So I made him this cloak. It didn't turn out as well as I'd like, but it'll be good enough, since I doubt he'll wear it long, guessing from the modeling session. Anyways, here's the cloak on the ground.

And here's a few action shots!

I'm hoping to make a tie too, but I'm not sure how well that's going to turn out, since my sewing machine is currently non-op.
