The wood in this photo is cherry. I also did myrtlewood, walnut and poplar.
I love carving cherry and walnut.
For anyone who is thinking of carving or has already started, if you aren't sure of your tools yet, try carving soap. It's forgiving enough to be fun and if you mess it up, you can still use the soap.
You can also carve basswood, which is a soft wood and easy to carve. Carving the cherry is sometimes a challenge, because of all that beautiful grain, but the results are gratifying.
