1  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Completed Projects / Re: Homemade Laundry Soap ** With Tute! ** (picture heavy) on: October 19, 2016 08:16:12 PM
Happily! I'm not a fan of fear mongering either, but I AM a fan of science and of people having all the information! Smiley Like I said, I'm not trying to upset anyone, just to share information! Everyone should of course do whatever is right for his or her family!

This site explains it well (it's a cloth diaper site, but it has good illustrations of how detergent works) http://www.fluffloveuniversity.com/sourced-science/

Here's one of the sites that explains the difference between soaps & detergents. http://www.detergentsandsoaps.com/soaps-detergents.html

And my personal favorite: a collection of people who have been using homemade detergent who "stripped" their clothing and the dirt that came out! (A strip is the soaking process used to strip away hard water mineral build-up or soap build-up (not to be confused with detergent) that is adhered to the fibers and get them clean again.) http://www.fortheloveofclean.com/laundry-love/the-bad-the-worse-and-the-ugly/testimonials-from-former-users-of-homemade-soap-photo-gallery/

As for the warranty/washer damage, there are plenty of anecdotes, but I recommend reaching out to the maker of your washer. I confirmed today with the manufacturer of mine (I have an LG) that using soap would void the warranty and that over time the soap would damage the washer because of the difference in chemical compounds between soap & detergent.

A modern washing machine doesn't produce the agitation needed to remove soap, leaving soap scum in clothes and your washer. It can be used as stain treatment or with a washboard though!

ETA: oops! To actually answer your question: I'm not sure how much. It would depend on your washer/washer company's policies.

I truly don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but since this was in today's craftster email, I wanted to let people know in case they're interested:

The science of what makes detergent work comes down to surfactants that grab a hold of the dirt in your clothing and pull it out when the water washes it away. Soap doesn't have surfactants, and isn't designed for your washing machine. Using it voids your machine warranty and will hurt it over time. If you were to strip your clothing (basically soaking it with cleaning agents) all the dirt that has built up in your clothes would come out and you'd see the homemade detergent wasn't actually working.

Feel free to ignore if you like - like I said, I don't mean to upset anyone! Just sharing the science of how detergent works. Smiley

Stella is back home, and brought all sorts of goodies with her! Alexampersandra spoiled us!

First, of course, the scrapbook! Here are a few of my favorite pages, and the maps Stella brought home!

We also got all kinds of goodies! Flip flops (perfect size!), a little notepad, a coozie, baseball bat pen, magnet, a GORGEOUS bracelet, and Stella's carrying bag!

In addition to all of that, candy!! We already ate a ton of the salt water taffy, and I'm so intrigued by the prickly pear candy!

Thank you, Alex! Stella had a wonderful time with you! Smiley

Haha that's how I always describe LVs to strangers- "like Flat Stanley! Except, you know, not flat. And not Stanley!" Grin

I can't believe time is almost up! Anana & I are working hard on the scrapbook, and plan to send tomorrow!

Anana went with my book club to the Michigan Renaissance Festival today! (Fun fact: we were having so much fun, we forgot to discuss the book! Oops!) I brought my hubby & baby along as well!

He checked out the weapons, but I said we shouldn't buy any - too hard to ship home!

We also watched a glassblowing demonstration!

Edited to add: sorry for the technical difficulties! I'll try again on the computer later

I can't believe we're running out of time with our LVs! It went by so quickly! I think the only other big thing we have planned is our book club trip to the Michigan Renaissance Festival.

Anana & I haven't been up to too much lately- I wasn't feeling great for a few days. He did come with me to the doctors though!

Anana & I had a great weekend in northern Michigan! (As you already know if you follow him on Instagram haha)

We drank wine, bought wine (I only got three bottles, but some in our group bought 20+!), and enjoyed the scenery!

We even visited a lighthouse & it happened to be National Lighthouse Day!

Anana & I haven't been up to too much lately, but we're going wine tasting in northern Michigan this weekend! In the meantime, enjoy the pickup line Anana thought up in case we meet any lady pineapples. Grin
