Alby visited the National Arborteum this afternoon - it was a bit chilly, but he saw lots of stuff even though it is winter.

There is a nice bonsai museum with lots and lots of bonsai

This bonsai was started in 1625!

It was a good day to take pictures at the Capitol columns (these were originally part of the Capitol building and are now in the middle of a field)

He also got to see the native plants exhibit. In high school (many years ago) I volunteered for two summers at the arboretum. Mostly I helped out with the native plants group, when this prairie was just being installed. At the time, this field was completely bare (tilled), we planted hundreds and hundreds of root stock across this field.

Ha, dancing Rupert is great!

Alby went downtown last night for happy hour, it is hard to get good photos after work now since it is so dark. At least the map in the metro station was lit up:

Tomorrow he is going to a very strange Chinese restaurant and then hopefully we will get to stop by the national arboretum around the corner. Apparently when China was renovating (rebuilding?) their embassy, they bought out an entire hotel to house the imported Chinese workers. This restaurant opened in the bottom of the hotel and serves really authentic Xi'an and Szechuan food, and stayed open after the embassy was finished and all the workers left. So now there is a really great Chinese restaurant in a seedy hotel in a more seedy area of town where there are pretty much absolutely no Chinese people (note to tourists in DC: think twice about that cheap hotel you see way out on New York Ave. Then think a third time if you are still considering it, and check out airbnb instead).

Alby visited Old Town Alexandria and went to a holiday open house at the Torpedo Factory.

The only torpedo still left from the original use of the building:

Now the Torpedo Factory houses dozens of art studios. There are paper mache sculptures and a faux-fireboat in the lobby.

We tried to go see the holiday boat parade on the Potomac, but it was cold and raining, so we went and had ice cream instead, haha.

It looks like Rupert is having a great time! Mmmm, cheese.....

Alby took a quick trip to Silver Spring (a suburb on the immediate DC border where I grew up) last night to see a film at the AFI Silver theater. The theater was built in the 30s, closed in the 80s (I remember seeing a few shows there before it closed), was vacant for 20 years before it was restored by the American Film Institute. Now it shows all kinds of art films and hosts film festivals like SilverDocs.

Alby got to see some snow, briefly:

The "dirty smudges" in the upper corner are actually snowflakes, which were a few inches across for a while.

Classic DC architecture in the Shaw neighborhood

Weird advertising posters

And random appearances of SpongeBob

Ok, finally got photos and added these scarves. The wool/silk ones are very lightweight - semi-sheer.

Alby arrived earlier this week! Today he came with me to set up some dyepots for an event tomorrow.

We are near peak color, but there isn't much of a show this year, as the weather has been opposite of what you need to get the best color. There are still a few pretty trees around, and my street is lined with bradford pears that are just starting to  turn.

Alby checks out some farmland in southern Maryland - these used to be tobacco fields, but now they are soy and hay.

This is what happens when you don't mow the lawn for 20 years...

Anyway, he helped husk some black walnuts

And kept an eye on the weld and nettle baths for me

The test woad vat is not working so well. We are going to try some fermentation vats after this weekend, hopefully with more success.

Tomorrow we will go back and do a lot more dyeing!
