1  Craft Swaps / ACTIVE SWAPS WHERE SIGN-UP PERIOD HAS CLOSED / Re: Whimsical Shrine Swap (SU CLOSED, SO 8/11) on: July 28, 2014 03:30:24 PM
Phase 1 of 3ish is complete! But Phase 2 is presenting some unexpected technical difficulties. I thought I owned enough kinds of glue and tape to attach any two surfaces, but none of them are sufficient for my mighty purpose. Maybe my opponents have a weakness to some hitherto unknown adhesive? Or... nails?

Adventure!

I started in on construction last night and realized there are some technical restrictions on the kind of paper the ephemera is printed on... still possible, but will definitely require some additional time and/or techniques!

I went through my ephemera last night and I think I found some quality stuff - so glad I did that ephemera swap a couple months back. Smiley

My friend always called them miner's lanterns but I just went on google images and apparently they're actually hollyhocks. Here is a random photo of them from google images (not my yard!):

In my yard (Zone 5a) they are perennial almost to the point of being weeds - my landlady actually sprayed them the first year I lived here and I had to tell her to stop because I like them. Sometimes they get over 6' tall, and the bottom part sometimes stays green all winter (unlike anything else in my yard).

I do have a slightly better picture:

The background is watercolor, the bee is pen and ink, and then the flower is a "miner's lantern" from my yard (which is the flower shown in the background underpainting).

Also, I just wanted to point out that I was almost late sending because I considered starting over - I liked the underpainting so much I didn't want to cover it up!

(The animal cards were mostly for extra package integrity... but they amuse me so I'm glad you liked them.)

I was interested but I will have to think about it as my carpal tunnel syndrome is bad in my wrist right now, so embroidery is on the back burner at the moment.
Alittlemusthave - I hope you feel better! If you can't use your wrist, don't push yourself - but also don't forget you could try a hoop in some other medium that uses less wrist motion. I've seen some lovely hoops using fabric painting, applique, etc. that might be easier for you.

Would it be OK to be working on a base before partners close? Since the base is about us and not our partners that should be OK, right?
Jexxican - Hmm... the only issue would be that if you worked on it for a month it might be intimidating for your partner to match your output in just 2 weeks. If it's just a matter of timeshifting, like you have a vacation or something during 8/11-8/25, I don't see a problem, but please don't spend more than 2 weeks on it! Smiley

I think I will limit this swap to US-only for solo participants. But if any of you living outside the US can find and invite a partner from your same country and both sign up at the same time, that would be okay. Smiley

How about:
- SU from 8/4-8/11
- Phase 1 (make your base) must be mailed by 8/25 (2 weeks)
- Phase 2 (finish your partner's hoop) must be mailed back by 9/12 (2 weeks +4 days for Phase 1 mailing time), or 18 days after your partner sends if they are late.

This is really exciting! I can't wait to see how the projects turn out.

I put up a couple of new boards on my pinterest - one for shrines I like and separate ones for some of my themes (spoiler alert???).

This would be a lot of fun! I always do altered Christmas cards but I never have the foresight to remember people's birthdays. Smiley I'm glad of the option to tweak categories because I almost always prefer gender-neutral cards.
