1  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Re: Bofur Fingerless glove pattern on: January 23, 2014 05:13:12 PM
Those look so cozy!  Does the yarn/stitch make them scratchy to wear?

Actually, the yarn was really soft and the pattern is stretchy instead of scratchy. I was worried they'd be scratchy as well, they looked a bit like it in Bofur's pick.

Thank you all for the comments Cheesy It was a lot of fun to do and change the pattern over to crochet.

And thank you HSG for recognizing my gloves! Cheesy

Let me know if their are any more questions out there.

So, I adore this guy right here:

James Nesbitt places Bofur the dwarf beautifully and manages to give him a sparkle of mischief and optimism that makes the Hobbit movies a lot more fun in my opinion.  He has an awesome pair of hand warmers that he wears, but, alas, they're knit. I only crochet so I decided to try and convert the seed stitch pattern to one that I could crochet.

Here is the result:

This was a lot of trial and error but it worked up fairly quickly once I figured out the stitch. The pattern is untested, so if you find an error, let me know Smiley This pattern is worked from the bottom up and is one solid piece. I used a medium gray worsted weight yarn for this, and a size H hook. Don't make your stitches to tight. You'll need three stitch markers for this as well. The glove is able to be worn on the right or left hand so make two of this pattern.

Bofur Fingerless gloves:

Your seed stitch pattern: odd rows: sc in st, dc in nxt st. Repeat that alternation the entire round. Even rows: dc in st, sc in nxt st. Repeat that alternation the entire round. You will master this stitch by the end. It creates a neat bumpy look like the knitted seed stitch.

Start: Chain 27 (if you need more keep the stitch count odd) sc in first chain so that you have a circle. Put a stitch marker there. You'll move it to the last stitch after each round is completed.

Rw 1: sc in each stitch.

Rw 2: dc in 1st st, sc in next st, sc in nxt st, seed stitch the remaining stitches. Move stitch marker to last stitch.

Rw 3: sc in 1st st, dc in nxt st, seed stitch all the way around the row.

Rw 4-16: repeat Rw 2 and 3. NOTE: if you want a shorter glove, just cut out a few rows here. End on an even count though, or you'll have to switch stitches.

Rw 17: start of the thumb. sc in 1st st, dc and sc in nxt st. Place stitch marker in the dc just made. dc in nxt st, sc and dc in nxt st. Place stitch marker in that stitch. Repeat seed stitch pattern around.

Rw 18: dc in 1st st, sc and dc in marked st,  place marker in sc just made, sc, dc, sc, dc and sc in nxt st, place marker in sc just made. repeat seed stitch pattern around.

Rw 19: sc in 1st st, dc and sc in marked st, place marker in dc just made. dc, sc, dc, sc, dc. sc and dc in nxt st, place marker in dc just made. Repeat seed stitch pattern around.

Rw 20-23: seed stitch all around. place markers in marked stitch.

Rw 24: dc in 1st st, ch 2, sc in 2nd marched st. this will leave you a fairly large hole, this is where your thumb will go. you can remove the two stitch markers now. DO NOT TAKE OFF THE MAKER THAT IS MARKING THE START OF YOUR ROUND! continue in seed stitch to the end of the round. You'll have 29 stitches (counting the 2 you chained.)

Rw 25: Seed stitch around.

Rw 26-29: Seed stitch around.

Rw 30: sc in first st, sl-st in next four stitches. Cut your yarn and fasten off. weave the tail back through the slip stitches.

I'm doing well. I've had to completely redesign my medium because the initial idea just did not pan out at all. I like the new idea better though, and I think it's going to turn out brilliant.

I've got everything planned out, and now I'm working on the large as it's going to take the most time. Smiley The medium is something I've never tried before, but I'm really excited!
